Personality

Background

Liu Er was the steward of the Azure Cloud Sect's Servant Office. Before Shen Yuan's return to prominence, he repeatedly made life difficult for him and enforced the orders of figures higher in the sect hierarchy. Servants specifically recognized that Liu Er had received orders “from above” to target Shen Yuan. 1

After Shen Yuan's spiritual roots were shattered, Liu Er treated him as worthless and exploited his authority to impose impossible labor quotas, deny rations, and subject him to retaliation. His later correspondence with Zhao Kun confirmed that he had repeatedly acted on Zhao Kun's instructions to suppress Shen Yuan, though it did not directly prove who ordered Shen Yuan's innate foundation destroyed. 1 20

Persecution in the Servant Compound

Liu Er assigns the severely injured Shen Yuan an impossible quota of three hundred catties of firewood and threatens to withhold his food if he fails. 1 He then has Zhou Hu and other servants sabotage Shen Yuan's work; the assignment ultimately becomes part of the plot that results in Shen Yuan being pushed from a cliff. 2 3

When Shen Yuan unexpectedly returns alive, Liu Er is visibly shocked but attempts to regain control by punishing him for allegedly failing the firewood task. He orders Zhou Hu to beat Shen Yuan publicly, only for Zhou Hu to be thrown aside by Shen Yuan's concealed strength. 9

Obstruction of the Outer Sect Assessment

Unable to openly punish Shen Yuan after Zhou Hu's defeat, Liu Er assigns him three days of exhausting work at the Rocky Beach as retaliation. 10 11 He then orders the registration point to prevent Shen Yuan from entering the Outer Sect Assessment. 11 12

Shen Yuan publicly challenges Liu Er to a sworn wager before the sect's incense tablets: Shen Yuan will serve as Liu Er's slave for three years if he fails the assessment, while Liu Er must kneel and apologize if Shen Yuan passes. Confident that Shen Yuan's shattered roots make success impossible, Liu Er accepts and is forced to register him. 12 13

Liu Er later supports renewed accusations that Shen Yuan stole cultivation manuals, hoping to disqualify him after his success in the assessment preliminaries. The attempt fails when Shen Yuan demonstrates the power of his self-derived fist art by shattering an azure testing stone. 17

Night Raid and Downfall

As Shen Yuan advances toward victory in the assessment, Liu Er secretly gathers trusted servants for a desperate attack. 19 He sends four men—among them the servants who previously pushed Shen Yuan off the cliff—to cripple Shen Yuan with clubs and knockout drugs, then stage the assault as an accident if exposed. 20

Shen Yuan defeats the attackers and forces a confession naming Liu Er as the mastermind. Patrol disciples arrest Liu Er, and a search of his residence uncovers correspondence linking him to Zhao Kun's campaign of suppression against Shen Yuan. Elder Zhang orders Liu Er imprisoned until after the finals. 20

After Shen Yuan wins the Outer Sect Assessment, Liu Er is brought before the arena in shackles and compelled to fulfill the wager. He kneels publicly and apologizes to Shen Yuan. 23 He is later expelled from the sect for false accusations and defamation. 30
