Nature and Classification
Demons are extraordinary beings native to the Abyss, whose Abyssal Planes are formed from the accumulated ruins of destroyed planes rather than naturally formed worlds. Such planes are hostile environments with violent elemental energy, where long-term inhabitants are extraordinary lifeforms. A human wizard entering an Abyssal Plane is considered as out of place as a demon entering the Prime Material Plane 184.
Demons vary enormously in body, bloodline, rank, and behavior. Some possess near-humanoid forms, while Demon Bloodlines can produce markedly grotesque hosts and remains 112.
| Designation | Documented example |
|---|---|
| First-Ring Demon | Quasits are First-Ring dark creatures and are considered low-level demons by Abyssal standards 14 |
| Second-Ring Demon Lord | Demon Lords can lead or recruit lesser demon races during Abyssal conflicts 193 196 |
| Fourth-Ring Demon King | Second-Ring Demon Lords may be backed by Demon Kings; their projected methods can still grant at least Third-Ring power despite vessel restrictions 196 |
| Eighth-Ring Demon God | The Abyss Mirror Demon is an Eighth-Ring Demon God whose lineage includes Fourth-Ring Mirror-Image Demons 303 |
Appearance
There is no single demonic appearance. Demons may resemble humanoids, beasts, or composite monstrosities, and their physical traits are strongly tied to lineage.
- Quasits are small, gray-skinned Abyssal demons; one inherited memory describes a Quasit as a roughly four-and-a-half-foot-tall gray-skinned giant from a lesser creature's perspective 14.
- Succubi may possess ram horns, a tail, and an outwardly beautiful humanoid form 55.
- Bigmouth Demons can be round-bodied, horned, and dominated by enormous tooth-filled mouths 51.
- War Demons have been observed in full armor, wielding weapons forged from condensed Abyssal aura 193.
- Demon Bloodlines and demon corpses can assume “bizarre and grotesque” forms even when true demons are broadly near-humanoid 112.
Demon Bloodlines
Parasitism
Certain demons act through Demon Bloodlines rather than descending openly. Quasit Bloodlines can parasitize humans, particularly officials with authority over others, and turn them into unwitting instruments for harvesting souls 15 16.
- They can mislead perception, manipulate emotions, distort a host's will, and compel actions the host would not otherwise choose 16.
- Parasitized hosts may never realize that they have encountered an extraordinary being 16.
- Quasit Bloodlines were used to influence manor stewards, whose cruelty and control over serfs created the murderous conditions needed to produce chaotic souls 15 16.
- Abyssal creatures are not suited to remaining in the Material World indefinitely; stronger demonic incursions also risk detection by the Wizard Black Tower 16 66.
Soul Harvesting
Demonic bloodlines and several demon races treat souls as resources. Quasits seek souls shaped by murder and suffering, though souls carrying hatred must first be “processed” before they can be consumed 16.
- Soul Crystals are a strategic Abyssal resource; the Abyssal Will prevents demons from exporting them through summoning rituals 48.
- Quasits can surrender a Soulstone containing part of their soul. This places them under severe exploitation but also makes them trusted enough to receive sensitive duties 20 46.
- A Soulstone with genuine self-will cannot be stored by the Scavenger Gourd, allowing its authenticity to be tested 20.
Lineages
| Lineage | Known traits |
|---|---|
| Quasit | First-Ring, cautious and cowardly Abyssal demon. Quasit Bloodlines can parasitize humans and manipulate their emotions and behavior 14 16. |
| Succubus | Uses a mental aura capable of influencing targets regardless of gender or race. Succubi can also manipulate elemental energy to create supportive domains and weaken hostile attacks 56 60. |
| Bigmouth Demon | A major demon race associated with soul consumption. Beelzebub, the Lord of Gluttony, is both its bloodline progenitor and a plane-sized entity 194 198. |
| Sandman | Feeds on the souls of the slothful and on Soul Crystals 112. |
| Dice Demon | Associated with magical Fate Dice; Rudolf/Andorf Hack uses one to assess danger and opportunity 184. |
| Mirror-Image Demon | Fourth-Ring lineage of the Abyss Mirror Demon; an incarnation can use mirror-law aura to make falsehood appear real and imitate another race’s bloodline power 303. |
