Background / History

Lu Jiatang was Zhao Linxiu's college friend and Jiang Tingxu's longtime friend. As the Lu family's only son, he was known for a steady temperament, strong principles, and a reputation for upright conduct. 72

At a banquet among prominent families, Fang Jin fell in love with Lu Jiatang at first sight. Lu regarded Fang Jin's intense pursuit as dangerous and incompatible with his own moral boundaries. Their conflict escalated until Lu nearly brought down the Fang family to force Fang Jin to retreat, after which Lu left the country. 72 80

During their separation, Lu's view of Fang Jin began to fracture. He learned that an incident once interpreted as Fang Jin's jealousy—having a waiter removed after Lu praised him—had actually been an attempt to protect Lu from the waiter drugging his drink. 81 After two years abroad, Lu returned to China still determined to keep Fang Jin at a distance, but found himself unable to remain indifferent. 80 82

Appearance

Lu Jiatang is not conventionally striking in individual features, but his composed bearing and restrained refinement make him memorable. Si You compares his temperament to warm jade: gentle, cultivated, and capable of absorbing emotion into a calm presence. 80

  • Downturned eyes and a faint, habitual smile. 80
  • Usually immaculate and formally dressed; being soaked, injured, or disheveled is notably out of character for him. 88
  • Maintains a fit, sharply defined physique beneath his reserved presentation. 112
  • Often wears Buddhist prayer beads, originally a gift from his grandfather. 92 147
  • His former gentleness later gains a colder, more imposing edge as he takes control of Lu Corporation and pursues Fang Jin. 105

Personality

Lu is measured, disciplined, and empathetic, but his tolerance is conditional. He can understand mistakes and unexpected losses, yet he rejects people decisively once they cross his personal boundaries. This rigidity initially made Fang Jin an “unsolvable problem” in Lu's eyes—someone he chose to avoid rather than understand. 80 115

After Fang Jin leaves Lindu, Lu becomes painfully aware that his past restraint was not emotional detachment. He realizes that Fang Jin's devotion had made him complacent and “spoiled,” and his former rejections become a lasting source of guilt. 91 121

When protecting Fang Jin, Lu's calmness can turn ruthless. He acquires Yue Lin, confronts Shen Laizhang over Fang Jin's stabbing, and refuses to yield to the Shi family after Shi Gu provokes Fang Jin. 100 165 In private, however, he is attentive to an almost excessive degree—remembering Fang Jin's food preferences, arranging medical care, and treating small domestic details as precious. 102 115 137
