Background / History

Nami began as a professional thief who targeted pirates rather than ordinary civilians. During her first known appearance, she infiltrated Alvida’s ship to steal its treasure, using her orange hair and passenger disguise to avoid detection. She hated pirates but had no objection to robbing pirates of their ill-gotten wealth. 7

She was forced to serve as an officer of the Arlong Pirates and produce navigational charts. Secretly, she saved 100 million Beli to buy back Cocoyasi Village. Arlong’s arrangement was fraudulent: Marine Colonel Nezumi seized Nami’s savings after she was only 70,000 Beli short of her goal. With her village doomed and her years of sacrifice destroyed, Nami collapsed and finally begged William for help. 34

Nami initially treated the Straw Hat Pirates as temporary allies, but Luffy already considered her a companion. After the conflict with Arlong, she officially became the crew’s navigator. 34 514 Her early partnership with William was similarly practical: he offered protection while she provided navigation, and he gradually became one of the people she trusted most.

During the Alabasta conflict, Nami supported the injured William while fleeing Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger.
