Background and Holdings

The Sun Family is one of Qingyun County's three major families. Its primary fortune comes from medicinal herbs; it also operates cloth shops, medicine shops, and general stores throughout the county seat. Its estate lands extend outside the city, while its main residence occupies nearly half a street in the eastern district 12 13 14.

Guard Corps and Martial Training

The Guard Corps is both the Sun Family's security force and a route for poor recruits to obtain martial instruction.

• Recruits receive lodging, a uniform, saber, and training in the Mountain-Settling Stance; only those who excel may enter the Sun Family Martial School or transfer to Mountain-Suppressing Martial Hall 14 15.
• Guard work is dangerous. The family urgently recruited after more than ten guards died in clashes with Black Tiger Hall, whose members specifically targeted isolated Sun guards 13 14.
• Guards who reach the Body-Tempering Realm may receive five taels of silver monthly and take paid assignments from the main family 18.

Conflict with Black Tiger Hall

The Sun Family's feud with Black Tiger Hall intensified during the struggle surrounding the Azure Cloud Gang's accusation that Black Tiger Hall had killed Zhao Mo and stolen the Mountain-Breaking Fist manual.

Sun Wenli represented the family in negotiations with Azure Cloud Gang leader Zhao Xiong. He conditionally agreed that the Sun Family would contribute forces against Black Tiger Hall, subject to approval from his elder brother 20.

After Black Tiger Hall was weakened by its failed Qinghe City operation, the Sun Family and Azure Cloud Gang struck together. Old Master Sun personally led the remaining guards in the assault; Black Tiger Hall's master was killed, its headquarters was destroyed, and its territory was divided. The Sun Family took control of East Street and South Street, while the Azure Cloud Gang held the west and north gates 32.

Qinghe City Escort Operation

The family dispatched an unusually strong escort for Third Young Master Sun Wenyue and Fourth Young Lady Sun Wenyao's supposed visit to their maternal relatives in Qinghe City. The convoy included eight guards, Qi-Gathering martial artists, martial-hall hires, and the hidden Martial Adept Elder Shen 22 23 25.

The journey was actually a mission to deliver a 300-year Scarlet Blood Lingzhi to Qin Zhenting, Wenyue and Wenyao's poisoned maternal grandfather. The Han Family of Qinghe City learned of the shipment and funded Black Tiger Hall's interception efforts 25 28.

• Guard Feng Ping betrayed the convoy, killing the old steward and Meng Gang before defecting to the attackers 25 29.
• Sun Wenyue stayed behind to cover Zhou Yan and Sun Wenyao's escape with the medicine 25.
• Following the mission's success, the Sun Family rewarded Zhou Yan with 100 taels of silver and two bottles of Qi Gathering Pills for saving Sun Wenyao 33.

Recruitment and Patronage

The Sun Family repeatedly attempted to secure Zhou Yan's long-term service, viewing his rapid growth as a valuable investment.

• Sun Wenyue's proposal — Offered Zhou Yan a ten-year retainer contract with cultivation methods, medicine, Qi Gathering Pills, and five times his current pay.
