Background and History
Danzo was originally an ordinary man from another world who awakened in the body of the young Shimura Danzo. Knowing the original Naruto story, he regarded becoming Hokage as insignificant and instead pursued Ōtsutsuki bloodlines, Tailed Beasts, the Rinnegan, and Six Paths-level power. His long search for Nagato and the Rinnegan failed because the world had diverged from the plot he knew 150 152.
As Root’s leader, Danzo built a covert power base through forbidden research and the collection of Bloodline Limits. Root was implicated in abductions, human experimentation, the detention of Sharingan users, and the disappearance of clan ninja classified as defectors or mission casualties 153 154 158. He also sought to exploit the Uchiha massacre to acquire Mangekyō Sharingan 88 95.
Danzo took an interest in Neji after Root failed to force him into a private meeting. Neji’s Transmigrator Detector reacted to Danzo, while Danzo’s crystal-ball surveillance could not see through the defenses around Stillness Garden 149 150. During their first confrontation, Danzo openly admitted that he was a transmigrator and attacked with the Seventh Gate, but Neji escaped through a prepared spatial talisman 152.
Neji retaliated by anonymously exposing Root’s experiments to Konoha’s major clans. Under pressure from Hiruzen and the clans, Danzo halted Root operations, destroyed test subjects and facilities, and was eventually detained pending a Jonin Council investigation 153 154 158.
After initiating the “Black Crow” plan and abandoning Konoha’s Root network, Danzo escaped confinement by unleashing his sealed power. He killed the Uchiha Clan Head, nearly killed the Hyuga Clan Head, overwhelmed Hiruzen’s Five Releases technique, and destroyed Enma’s Adamantine Staff form 160 161. Neji intervened before Danzo could kill Hiruzen, identifying the Gate of Death as incomplete and exploiting its instability 162 163.
Danzo later attempted to assassinate Neji with a poisoned kunai and the Inner Four Symbols Seal. Neji’s Three-Phase Immortal Power disintegrated the attack, destroyed Danzo’s arm, and annihilated the sealing sphere with the Three-Phase Pure Realm Lightwheel 206 207.
Posthumous Return and Usurpation
Danzo’s surviving consciousness gathered fragments of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s will, using them to reinforce his Yin Release and seek a new vessel 223. He infiltrated the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path through its Divine Tree connection, entered Madara Uchiha’s mindscape, and defeated Madara’s consciousness through psychological warfare and Yin Release: Kaguya Soul Devourer 223 224.
After taking Madara’s body, Danzo restored it to its physical prime with Special White Zetsu and claimed Madara’s Rinnegan, Hashirama-cell-enhanced body, Crimson Armor, and Flame War Fan. He discarded the Eye of the Moon Plan and ordered 100,000 White Zetsu to attack the Land of Rain front 224.
During the ensuing battle, Danzo used the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, reanimated jinchuriki, and Limbo: Border Jail against Neji. Neji neutralized each measure with Three-Phase Creation Force and trapped the Limbo shadows inside the Three-Phase Sage Art: Crystal Domain Eight Trigram Formation 227.
Appearance
In his original body, Danzo is a tall, well-dressed middle-aged man with one exposed, eagle-like eye and a bandaged right eye 151.
- Wears dark elder’s robes and later Root-associated attire.
- Keeps his transplanted Sharingan concealed beneath bandages on his arm 236.
- His incomplete Gate of Death state produces blood-red chakra steam, cracking skin, exposed muscle fibers, and an increasingly inhuman voice 161 162.
- After taking Madara’s body, he assumes Madara’s bronze skin, muscular physique, thick black hair, Rinnegan, Crimson Armor, and Flame War Fan 224.
Personality
Danzo is calculating, patient, and intensely possessive of power. He treats political office, village institutions, and even human lives as tools for obtaining a higher realm. His claim that the Hokage title is merely “a game for mortals” reflects his contempt for authority that does not directly increase his strength 150.
His transmigrator knowledge makes him especially paranoid about anomalies. Neji’s existence, Crystal Release, and deviation from the original plot unsettle him because they threaten to invalidate decades of preparation 150 152.
As his plans fail, Danzo’s restraint erodes into open contempt and obsession. He calls the native inhabitants of the world “paper people,” dismisses the Will of Fire as hypocrisy, and eventually abandons Madara’s grand plan in favor of revenge against Neji 161 224.
Abilities & Skills
Transmigrator Knowledge
Danzo possesses foreknowledge of the original Naruto storyline and uses it to identify major power sources and future figures.
- Searched across the Land of Rain, Hidden Grass, and other regions for Nagato and the Rinnegan 150.
- Intended to monopolize Ōtsutsuki bloodlines, Tailed Beasts, and the Rinnegan 152.
- Recognized Neji as an anomaly because this version lacked the expected Byakugan and possessed Crystal Release instead 150.
- His knowledge becomes unreliable when plot deviations alter people and events 150.
Root Intelligence and Forbidden Research
As Root’s leader, Danzo commands a network built around secrecy, surveillance, coercion, and experimental research.
- Uses Root operatives to recruit or pressure Konoha ninja outside normal Hokage procedures 149.
- Maintains hidden laboratories containing cultivation tanks, modified human subjects, experimental records, and Bloodline Limit research 154.
- Orders test subjects destroyed and evidence erased when exposed 154.
- Uses a crystal ball to spy on Stillness Garden, though Neji’s defenses obscure the target area 150.
Eight Gates
Danzo has trained the Eight Gates to a level far beyond what Konoha expects from an elder.
- Seventh Gate: Gate of Shock — Multiplies his chakra to peak Shadow Rank and enables attacks such as Daytime Tiger 152.
- Incomplete Gate of Death — Releases power beyond Shadow Rank, granting monstrous physical strength and speed 161.
- The incomplete Gate of Death damages his body, produces unstable red chakra steam, and lacks the full destructive force of the genuine Eighth Gate 162 163.
Yin Release
Danzo’s Yin Release is his primary supernatural affinity and becomes more dangerous after absorbing Kaguya’s will.
- Yin Release: Soul-Eroding Touch — Corrodes chakra constructs, including Neji’s crystals 157.
- Yin Release: Manifestation of Ten Thousand Souls — Summons ghostlike manifestations of dead experimental subjects within his barrier 157.
- Yin Release: Ten Thousand Souls Corrosion — Spiritually contaminates and severs Neji’s Crystal World formations 162.
- Yin Release: Kaguya Soul Devourer — Forms a maw of Kaguya’s resentful faces to consume Madara’s consciousness 224.
- The God-Demon Pillar can purify this chakra, weakening Danzo’s Nightmare Eye and breaking his restraints 158.
Sharingan and Izanagi
Danzo possesses transplanted Sharingan and uses them as disposable tools for forbidden techniques.
- Keeps multiple Sharingan embedded beneath the bandages on his arm 236.
- Activates Izanagi to rewrite reality at the cost of a Sharingan’s sight 236.
- Neji’s Sage Art: Crystal Domain Seal: Endless Annihilation suppresses space, chakra, and Izanagi’s reality-rewriting effect 236.
Madara’s Stolen Power
After consuming Madara’s consciousness, Danzo gains access to the body’s inherited powers.
- Rinnegan — Gives him access to Madara’s ocular power and Limbo: Border Jail 224 227.
- Hashirama Cells — Restored through the body’s existing Hashirama-cell integration, visibly marked by Hashirama’s face on his chest 224.
- Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Summons the Ten-Tails husk and commands its Wood Dragons 227.
- White Zetsu command — Mobilizes 100,000 White Zetsu for war 224.
- His Limbo shadows are vulnerable to Neji’s Crystal Domain formation, which contaminates and seals them in space-time amber 227.
Equipment
- Crystal ball — Scrying tool used to observe targets such as Stillness Garden 150.
- Transplanted Sharingan arm — Provides Izanagi and is concealed under bandages 236.
- Crimson Armor — Madara’s armor claimed after Danzo takes his body 224.
- Flame War Fan — Madara’s war fan, used by Danzo after body appropriation 224.
Relationships
- Neji Hyuga — Primary enemy and fellow anomaly. Danzo sees Neji as a variable threatening his monopolization of the Ninja World’s resources; Neji repeatedly exposes, counters, and ultimately seeks to destroy him 150 152 206 227.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former academy peer and longtime political counterpart. Danzo exploits Hiruzen’s hesitation and old loyalty while openly despising his Will of Fire ideology 158 161.
- Root operatives — Subordinates conditioned to obey him without question; Danzo treats them as disposable instruments and abandons Root when it becomes a liability 154 160.
- Madara Uchiha — Intended vessel. Danzo invades Madara’s mindscape, shatters his faith in the Eye of the Moon Plan, devours his consciousness, and steals his body and legacy 223 224.
- Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s residual will — Source of Danzo’s posthumous spiritual power and corruption; he absorbs its fragments to sustain his parasitic existence 223.
- Major Konoha clans — Victims of Root’s abductions and experiments. The Uchiha, Hyuga, Yamanaka, and other clans force Hiruzen to investigate and detain Danzo 153 158.
