Background / History

The Byakugan is one of the Three Great Dōjutsu. Its comparatively gentle awakening process—where even less-pure bloodlines could gradually awaken through arduous training after adulthood—inspired the Uchiha clan's development of the Mind Reflection Technique for awakening the Sharingan 9.

Qian first encountered a transplanted Byakugan in Ao's right eye; it appeared as a faintly glowing crystalline gem and was described as having decent purity. The text notes that main-family Hyuga eyes are generally purer and stronger, though exceptional branch-family talents can defy that pattern 435.

Qian implanted a Byakugan at the center of his brow by creating an additional visual system from his pineal gland. A Shadow Clone used the Mystical Palm Technique to stimulate the gland while Qian used his Mangekyō Sharingan's Human Authority to guide its evolution and form a new visual nerve 485. He later removed a trace of internal disharmony with Human Authority and self-healing, confirming that the transplant had taken successfully 486.

Early in its integration, the eye could not close on its own, though it did not continuously consume chakra by displaying its power. Its chakra consumption decreased as Qian's body accepted the transplant and activated the relevant genes 545 637. Qian subsequently accelerated its evolution by feeding it chakra compressed through the All Things of the Universe Sealing, later incorporating Sage Art Chakra and his self-created Pinnacle of Body technique into the process 743 972 1059.

The Byakugan is set at the center of Qian's brow and is normally concealed beneath seals and his forehead protector 647 796.

• Before a later evolution, it resembled mutton-fat white jade; afterward, it was compared to a top-grade diamond 1114.
