Background / History

Magneto dedicated himself to ending the oppression of mutants. During his childhood, a Nazi officer killed his parents in front of him to force out his mutant abilities, an experience that shaped his militant worldview. He believes coexistence with humanity is impossible without mutants holding decisive power. 33

As leader of the Brotherhood, Magneto devised a plan to use the Magnetic Device to transform world leaders into mutants. Because operating the device would consume the life force of a magnetic mutant, he initially intended to transfer his powers to Rogue and have her activate it, killing her in the process. 27

When Mystique failed to extract Rogue from Xavier's School, Magneto arrived personally to retrieve both of them. Mystique instead remained with Su Zheng, leaving Magneto stunned by the apparent betrayal of a subordinate who had served him for decades. 28 29

Magneto attempted to take Su Zheng by force after recognizing his similar magnetic abilities. Su Zheng summoned the Hulk as reinforcement; Magneto could bind the Hulk with metal but could not meaningfully injure or contain him. After narrowly avoiding the Hulk's attack, Magneto withdrew. 30 31

He continued with his summit operation at the Statue of Liberty, prepared to die while activating the Magnetic Device himself. Su Zheng ultimately erased Magneto's mutant ability within close range, shutting down the device and allowing Magneto to be captured alive. 32 33 34

Personality

Magneto is resolute, domineering, and intensely committed to mutant survival. He views himself as a protector of persecuted mutants and is willing to endanger or kill ordinary humans to create a world in which mutants cannot be oppressed. 32 33

He is also pragmatic and ruthless toward his own followers. He follows a survival-of-the-fittest philosophy and is willing to abandon subordinates who no longer serve his plans. 29 Despite this, he does not wish to kill mutants and sought to recruit Su Zheng as his successor because of Su Zheng's power and shared magnetic ability. 33 34
