Background / History

Tony is the owner of Stark Industries. While demonstrating weapons in the Middle East, he is kidnapped by the Ten Rings and held for two months. During captivity, shrapnel lodged near his heart forces him to rely on a crude Arc Reactor and magnets to survive. With Ethan’s assistance, he builds a prototype Iron Suit to escape. 1 2 3

Su Zheng reaches the Ten Rings camp before Tony’s escape, eliminating its soldiers and later revealing his magnetic-field powers by transferring Tony’s armor onto himself. After Su Zheng precisely removes the shrapnel near Tony’s heart, Tony recognizes him as a friend and gives both Su Zheng and Ethan three million dollars. 3 4

Following his return to New York, Tony publicly shuts down Stark Industries’ weapons division and unveils the Arc Reactor. After Obadiah Stane attacks him and threatens Pepper Potts, Tony calls Su Zheng for help; Su Zheng defeats Stane and saves both of them. Tony subsequently announces to the public that he is Iron Man. 5 6 8 9

Tony joins Su Zheng and Bruce Banner in the Illuminati. He uses his influence to oppose General Ross’s attempt to seize Banner, helping have Banner’s wanted notice revoked. 11 18 19

During his conflict with Hulk, Tony learns firsthand that his armor’s weapons cannot injure Hulk and is brutally beaten before calling Su Zheng for assistance. 12 13

Later, Tony suffers palladium poisoning from the Arc Reactor. Su Zheng directs him toward creating a new element using Howard Stark’s relics, allowing Tony to slow the poisoning and survive. In repayment for repeated rescues, Tony agrees to produce one hundred Iron Suits for Su Zheng. 36 38 39 40

Personality

Tony is proud, theatrical, and highly confident in his own intellect. He embraces the Iron Man identity publicly and often responds to challenges with bravado, whether facing Hulk, betting on Mjolnir, or proposing that JARVIS can defeat Su Zheng in a sparring match. 9 12 44 50

He is also capable of loyalty and gratitude. Tony considers Su Zheng a friend after the desert rescue, supports Banner against the military, and repeatedly acknowledges that Su Zheng has saved his life. 4 18 39 42

Despite his confidence, Tony is pragmatic when overwhelmed. He surrenders after JARVIS cannot analyze Su Zheng’s constantly changing martial arts, and he refuses Su Zheng’s wager over Mjolnir after losing too many previous bets. 44 50
