History
Hashirama Senju established the One Country, One Village System, under which shinobi villages depended on daimyos for economic support. His death was followed by three Shinobi World Wars; the Tailed Beasts he had distributed became weapons in those conflicts 207 227 247.
During the Third Shinobi World War, smaller countries suffered as stronger villages fought across their territory. Grass Country, for example, became a battlefield for Leaf and Stone forces 67 106. Hyuga Satoru’s battlefield victories helped end that war, after which he pursued changes to the world’s political and technological systems 128 244.
In Year 53 of Leaf Village, Leaf forces overthrew the Land of Fire’s daimyo. The subsequent Constitution of the Will of Fire founded the Fire Federation Republic and ended the One Country, One Village System there. Grass Country later overthrew its own daimyo and joined the republic 235 244.
A conflict surrounding joint Chunin Exams led Satoru to declare the Fourth Shinobi World War in Year 55. Leaf’s mecha-equipped forces defeated opposing armies, and the former Five Great Nations were brought into the Shinobi World Republic Alliance, later called the Shinobi Federation 286 287 291 292.
Society and Technology
- Education: The reformed Leaf Academy teaches subjects beyond combat, including social productivity and weekly psychological-health classes. Its curriculum also covers the New Era Will of Fire and scientific principles 239 240 275.
- Communications: Phones, videos and broadcasts spread information across the world. Leaf used them to promote its political ideas and televise the Chunin Exams 269 272 275.
- Industry and warfare: The Federation develops electromagnetic technology, firearms, mecha and new energy systems. Chakra conversion, nuclear energy and antimatter are successive areas of development 244 287 328.
- Uneven consequences of reform: The new order protects schoolchildren from wartime deployment, but it also uses reincarnated enemy ninja as energy sources and puts former nobles to forced labor 246 247 292.
The Ōtsutsuki Threat
Satoru informs Federation leaders that their world is a sphere in space and that the Ōtsutsuki have colonized other planets. The Federation accelerates technological and military development in preparation for their arrival 304 305. After an Ōtsutsuki attack reveals that the clan regards the world’s inhabitants as livestock, shinobi across the Federation unite against them. The world later contributes its resources to a fleet bound for the Ōtsutsuki homeworld 319 328.
