History

Jiraiya is a member of Konoha’s Three Sannin alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. After the Second Shinobi World War, he took in the Amegakure war orphans Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan. Years later, he recognizes Yahiko’s body as Pain’s Deva Path during Akatsuki’s attack on Konoha 182 310.

On the Hidden Cloud front, the Third Raikage cripples Jiraiya’s right arm before he can enter Sage Mode. Tianyi heals the arm, and Jiraiya agrees to delay the Raikage while Tianyi and Minato engage the A–B Combo. He later enters Sage Mode and burns the Cloud forces with Goemon, then holds the battlefield while Leaf troops evacuate ahead of Tianyi’s missile strike 240 254 255. After the war, Jiraiya returns from the Iwagakure front with Orochimaru and receives a Special Operations Unit advisory post rather than a more political appointment 278.

A prophecy from the Great Toad Sage leads Jiraiya to believe Tianyi will bring war to the Ninja World. Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Hiruzen reject his interpretation. His distrust deepens as Tianyi pursues world unification, while Jiraiya objects to the treatment of Hidden Mist and to Leaf tactics that destroy civilian water and food supplies in the Land of Wind 403 404 488 504.

After Hagoromo grants him Yang Power, Jiraiya intervenes on the Sunagakure front and fights Tianyi in an isolated desert. Tianyi defeats him; Jiraiya survives severe burns and radiation damage through rapid regeneration, but his chakra pathways are sealed. When the external Yang Power is withdrawn, the regeneration stops 492 512 515 517.

Appearance

Jiraiya is a burly man with long white hair. He wears a red outer robe, wooden clogs, and a forehead protector bearing the character for “oil” rather than Konoha’s emblem 403 404.

• Sage Mode — His nose becomes large and toad-like, markings appear on his face, and Fukasaku and Shima stand on his shoulders 254.
• Yang Power — A golden, sun-shaped mark appears on his palm 492.

Personality

Jiraiya is often joking and irreverent, but remains composed enough to accept a supporting role against the Third Raikage and trust Tianyi’s battlefield plan. His encounter with Yahiko as Pain visibly shakes him 240 278 310.

His opposition to Tianyi is rooted in the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy and his belief that peace cannot be imposed through conquest. In the Land of Wind, he refuses to accept promised relocation and aid as justification for first destroying civilians’ homes and means of survival—even when that puts him against his own comrades 404 504 512.

Jiraiya draws on natural energy and fights alongside the elder toads Fukasaku and Shima 254.

• Uses a senjutsu-enhanced Swamp of the Underworld to trap the Third Raikage, A, and Killer B in a regenerating marsh 254.
