At dawn, the Congo River woke from its slumber, and the mighty long river brimmed with life. Goliath Tigerfish flashed their silver scales as they chased strangely shaped Elephantnose fish. Congo Sunbirds spread their colorful feathers, hunting Glass Frogs among the waterside trees.
Large mammalian beasts dwelt contentedly in the rainforest, enjoying the newborn sunlight. In the water rolled great herds of hippos, while on the banks stood small groups of African Forest Elephants. The Congo River was a true river of life. Tens of thousands of strange species multiplied and thrived upon this fertile tropical land.
By the riverbank, three Caravels were a scene of bustle. The sailors hauled in the anchors, raised the sails, and set off west once more. Everyone was so impatient that the sailors on the masts kept adjusting the angles of the lateen sails, all just to leave this devil's land a little faster.
On the leading flagship, boatswain Diego looked smug. He sat at the bow with his legs spread, eating the lavish food reserved for a captain's rank while ordering the sailors about. Beside Diego, several trusted sailors gathered around, eating, drinking, laughing, and making a racket.
After the men joked for a while, one sailor obligingly raised his right hand, mimicking the airs of the nobility, and gave a captain's salute that was neither fish nor fowl.
"Honored Captain Diego, the lads salute you! We're about to pass the black natives' village. When are you taking the lads ashore to have another go? Foda-se! We resupplied at this village before, and those chiefs had valuable rubies on them!"
"Ha ha!"
Hearing himself called captain, Diego burst into satisfied laughter. He reached out and slapped the sailor hard on the head, laughing as he cursed.
"Foda-se! You idiot! That village doesn't just
