The Object of Hatred

"I wasn't worried!" Shinn immediately retorted loudly, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

Heat rose to his cheeks. He did not know whether it was the embarrassment of having his thoughts seen through, or the other man's unhurried attitude. "I was just... just a little concerned..." His voice grew quieter and quieter until it was almost a mumble.

"Isn't that worrying?" Rau Le Creuset pressed, the amusement in his voice growing stronger.

"It isn't!" Shinn pulled up the blanket, nearly burying his head beneath it, leaving only a pair of red eyes filled with defiance.

Seeing the boy like that, Rau Le Creuset finally could not hold it in. He raised a gloved hand and lightly covered his mouth, letting out a clearly audible chuckle.

The laugh was not loud, but it was especially clear in the quiet hospital room. There was no mockery in it, only the simple delight of someone who had been genuinely amused.

That laugh made Shinn's face burn even hotter.

"Ah—honestly, just leave already!" He gave up trying to explain and spoke in a tone that was practically driving him away. "We're going back to PLANT tomorrow. Don't you still have a lot to prepare!?"

As though he had truly been reminded of something important, he nodded. "Then I shall gladly comply."
