Background

The Sand Ninja first engage Uchiha Ying's ANBU squad at a Wind Shadow Village outpost. An Elite Chunin counters the squad's combined Fire Release with Wind Release: Sand Blade, but Ying detects instability in his chakra and orders a concentrated attack that breaks the technique and defeats the defender. Although the ANBU breach the outpost, the surrounding desert's sandstorms, heat, quicksand, and other hazards force their withdrawal 15.

Later, Ying, Uchiha Kagami, and Nara Luquan uncover a concealed Sand Ninja base in a valley near the border. Rather than assault it immediately, they study its patrol routes, defenses, terrain, and structures before infiltrating it for intelligence 19.

The base contains documents exposing a planned multi-directional assault on Konoha. The Sand Ninja intend to cooperate with rogue ninja, stockpile supplies, train elite assault units, and infiltrate neighboring countries with spies to study Konoha's defenses 21.

During the later Wind Country campaign, the Sand Ninja maintain supply stations, grain transport routes, concealed ambushes, and secret bases to sustain their war against Konoha. Although their forces temporarily lure Hatake Sakumo's unit into a trap after allowing the destruction of a lightly guarded grain station, Sakumo's reconnaissance force discovers and defeats the ambush. A subsequent Konoha infiltration destroys another secret Sand Ninja base, despite heavy casualties on both sides 61 62 63.

Sunagakure suffers a major collapse after Konoha captures half of its territory and suppresses the First Kazekage's final counterattack. Following Chiyo's defeat by Sakumo, the Kazekage's death, and the destruction of Sand morale, a Sunagakure commander formally surrenders 72 73. The surrender does not permanently end hostilities: Sunagakure later renews attacks on Konoha outposts and participates in the Second Ninja World War, including Shamon's ambush of Kagami Uchiha's unit near the Wind Country–Land of Fire border 114 156.

A Sand Ninja Elite Chunin reinforces the outpost defense with Sand Blade, initially blocking Ying's squad's Fire Release. Ying identifies a lapse in the technique's chakra stability, concentrates his squad's attack on a single point, and defeats the defender before continuing into the desert 15.

Discovery of the Hidden Base

After detecting concealed tracks and abnormal energy fluctuations near the border, Ying's team traces them to a secret Sand Ninja base. The group conducts reconnaissance rather than attacking without a plan 19.

Infiltration and Muramoto's Defeat

Ying, Kagami, and Luquan infiltrate the base during an alarm. Muramoto confronts them with powerful Wind Release, but Ying's genjutsu barrier and Fire Release create the opening Kagami needs to kill him 20.

Sand Ninja Conspiracy

The base is cleared and Luquan discovers documents outlining the Sand Ninja's alliance with rogue ninja, espionage campaign, stockpiling efforts, and planned surprise attack on Konoha. The discovery prompts Tobirama to reinforce Konoha's surveillance, form a special operations unit, and dispatch spies into Sunagakure 21.

Wind Country Counteroffensive

Ying's Shadow Guard squad destroys a Sand Ninja stronghold through sustained Fire Release strengthened by Wind Release, while Kagami's force seals enemy troops inside a canyon 23. Zhili subsequently leads the Shadow Guard against a larger Sand Ninja force, repels it, and captures an enemy outpost 24.

Sunagakure Outpost Raids

Zhili and Ying divide their forces to destroy five Sand Ninja outposts, gathering supplies and intelligence after each attack. Sand Ninja reinforcements surround Ying's group after the fourth raid and resist his Sharingan genjutsu, but Zhili's arrival reverses the battle. The Uchiha complete the destruction of the fifth outpost before withdrawing to Konoha 25 26.

Wind Country Supply War

On the Wind Country front, Sand Ninja forces maintain a supply station guarded by a Jonin and five Chunin. Sakumo and Deyang eliminate its sentries, attack from the rear, kill the Jonin, and overrun the station. The apparently easy capture proves to be bait, but Konoha scouts uncover and defeat the hidden Sand Ninja ambush 61 62.

Secret Base Destruction and Sunagakure's Surrender

As the war intensifies, Sand Ninja preparations for a large-scale offensive prompt Sakumo's elite squad to infiltrate and destroy a secret base. Konoha subsequently captures half of Sand territory and withstands the First Kazekage's final counterattack. Chiyo's defeat by Sakumo, the Kazekage's death, and the collapse of Sunagakure's morale result in a formal surrender, although Konoha remains wary of future unrest 63 72 73.

Second Ninja World War Ambush

Sunagakure resumes hostilities during the Second Ninja World War. Near the Wind Country–Land of Fire border, Shamon uses a sandstorm to conceal dozens of Sand Ninja and ambush Kagami's advancing unit. Kagami rallies his soldiers, while Orochimaru volunteers to remain behind and confront Shamon so the main force can escape 156.
