Background
Li Ya was a Li Family prodigy and the first-year Rocket Class monitor at Bay City Martial Arts High School. He was considered a future seedling because he had approached Great Completion of Bright Force while still in his first year. 22 30
Before Yang Sheng's rise, Li Ya used Yang as a sparring partner whenever Li Yan rested. Yang later recalled the broken ribs and repeated abuse inflicted by both Li Ya and Li Yan. 22 39
Li Ya was placed on the school-test candidate list against Yang Sheng despite the apparent disparity between their cultivation levels. Jiang Tian believed the arrangement was a deliberate attempt to eliminate Yang Sheng and suppress Lower Registry students. 23
Appearance
Li Ya is a tall, powerfully built young martial artist. He stood more than half a head taller than Yang Sheng during their school-test confrontation. 30 39
- Broad, sturdy physique suited to close-range fighting. 30 39
- Often carries an imposing, violent presence when releasing his aura. 39 40
- His face was severely burned and torn by the force of Yang Sheng's Heart-Piercing Elbow. 41
Personality
Li Ya was arrogant, contemptuous of Lower Registry people, and certain that Yang Sheng could not challenge him. He regarded Yang's former role as a sparring partner as proof of his inferiority and planned to reinforce that hierarchy through public violence. 30 34 39
His confidence became openly murderous before the school test. Rather than simply seeking victory, he intended to break Yang Sheng's spine, hands, and feet, leaving him unable to cultivate again. 34
When Yang Sheng repeatedly evaded and redirected his attacks, Li Ya's certainty gave way to shock and panic. After being overwhelmed, he surrendered and begged for his life. 39 40 41
Abilities & Skills
Bright Force Cultivation
Li Ya possessed exceptional cultivation for a first-year student and concealed the extent of his progress until the school test. 22 40
- Reached the pinnacle of Lesser Completion of Bright Force through deliberate compression of his cultivation. 30 40
- Broke through to Great Completion of Bright Force in the arena. 40
- Could launch a heavy punching bag hard enough to snap its hemp rope and send it into a wall. 34
Close-Range Combat
Li Ya favored direct, explosive attacks intended to overwhelm opponents with speed and force. 39 40
- Opens fights with powerful straight punches and rushing charges. 39 40
- Uses sweeping kicks as follow-up attacks when punches fail. 39
- Relies heavily on raw strength and aggressive pressure; Yang Sheng exploited his loss of balance and predictable attacks through Whirling Wind Hand. 39 40
Relationships
- Li Yan — Li Family relative and ally. Li Yan urged him to cripple or kill Yang Sheng during the school test and later ordered him to finish the fight within ten breaths. 22 34 39
- Yang Sheng — Former sparring partner and eventual opponent. Li Ya had injured Yang during their earlier training, then lost to him in the school test and was left permanently crippled. 22 39 41
- Jiang Tian — Yang Sheng's teacher and a vocal opponent of Li Ya's inclusion in the school-test candidate list. Jiang Tian considered the matchup potentially fatal and manipulated against Yang Sheng. 23
School Test
Li Ya entered the school test as the Upper Registry's final and strongest representative. Li Yan instructed him to kill Yang Sheng before Jiang Tian or other observers could intervene. 39
He began by attempting to overwhelm Yang Sheng with successive punches and a kick, but Yang Sheng narrowly evaded the punches and used Whirling Wind Hand to redirect his kick, disrupt his balance, and slap him across the face. 39
Li Ya then revealed his concealed cultivation and broke through to Great Completion of Bright Force in the arena. Even at his full strength, he could not land a decisive blow; Yang Sheng redirected another attack with Whirling Wind Hand and Cloud-Crushing Strike, sending him flying with a second slap. 40
Yang Sheng ultimately crushed Li Ya's abdomen, shoulder, and thigh with three punches. Li Ya surrendered when Yang's Heart-Piercing Elbow stopped just short of his head, but the released force still mutilated his face. Yang Sheng then broke Li Ya's remaining intact hand and leg before leaving him unconscious. 41
Death
After the school test, Li Ya was found dead in what was publicly described as a suicide. The reported circumstances were highly suspicious: he had allegedly hanged himself after binding his own hands and feet. 51 52 59
The Li Family erased Li Ya from its genealogy and did not pursue public retaliation against Yang Sheng. Jiang Tian and Yang Sheng both suspected that a powerful third party had intervened. 52 59
