Volstagg lay in the dented roof of the car, his back sunk into twisted metal. He stared steadily at the Destroyer as it drew closer.
The Destroyer stopped before Volstagg and bent down to face him. Its faceplate slid back, revealing a hollow inside its helmet. Orange light began to glow within it.
Light also seeped through the seams of its body, as though magma churned beneath its metal shell. It was ready to finish off the weakling who had dared attack it but had been no match for it.
Volstagg still did not move. As the light before him grew brighter, he broke into a grin. His plan had worked. On the roof behind the Destroyer stood a familiar figure.
Sif.
While Volstagg, Fandral, and Hogun had drawn the Destroyer's attention from the front, she had climbed onto the roof of the house beside them.
She watched the Destroyer bend down and light flare inside its body. But its attention was fixed entirely on Volstagg. It had not noticed her.
Sif leaped from the edge of the roof, gripping her weapon, now extended into a spear. Its point aimed for the back of the Destroyer's neck. She never wasted an opening her teammates gave her.
The Destroyer was still charging its beam. The light within it grew brighter, the energy in its hollow helmet more intense. In another moment, it would burn the enemy lying before it to ash.
But Sif's spear drove into the back of its neck and punched through, pinning the Destroyer to the ground in its hunched position.
The light inside the Destroyer faded. With its neck pierced, it remained pinned there, motionless.
Volstagg breathed a sigh of relief. Sif, standing atop the Destroyer with the spear in her hands, smiled faintly too. She had
