Background / History

Zhou Tian is the unfavored second son of the Zhou Household. When the family divided, he received nothing; nevertheless, he supported his wife Zhang Fang and their children through dangerous work at the Black River Fishery. He and Zhou Chen spent several years saving more than seven taels of silver for Zhou Chen’s martial-arts tuition. 1 2

Old Master Zhou and Zhou Tao forcibly took those savings to secure Zhou Ping a position with the Feng Household. Zhou Tian resisted because the money represented his son’s future, but was beaten severely and severed ties with the larger Zhou Household as a result. 2

To preserve Zhou Chen’s chance of entering a martial arts hall, Zhou Tian entrusted him with a lump of flesh he had secretly raised for over a year. He had collected the originally fingernail-sized remnant after Inner City martial artists killed a Mist Monster near the river, hoping it might be a treasure.
