To be honest, if Jing Yi had to stand there and face General Chen in a one-on-one showdown, he would definitely have trembled. But now he was sitting down. He had spent more than twenty years in a wheelchair, steady as a mountain and rich in experience. This was his home ground!
So no matter how much psychological pressure Jing Yi was under, he looked perfectly composed on the surface. His posture was relaxed and elegant, and there was even a faint smile on his face.
That alone was enough to earn the admiration of the guard standing nearby as an idle spectator.
When Jing Yi actually began making small talk with General Chen, the guard was completely floored.
Was this man thick-skinned, or was there more to him than met the eye? He was becoming harder and harder to understand...
Jing Yi said, "General Chen, you're Qin Meng's direct superior?"
General Chen lifted his eyelids and glanced at him without answering.
Jing Yi said, "With a commander as caring toward his subordinates as you, you must be deeply beloved throughout the military district under your command, right?"
Having touched on General Chen's proudest point, Jing Yi still received no reply, but the general could not help giving a reserved nod.
Jing Yi said, "I knew it! Speaking of which, our Qin Meng was truly unfortunate. Could you tell me what mission Qin Meng was carrying out when he died? I heard they didn't even recover his body. It's so heartbreaking to think about."
That "our Qin Meng" made General Chen's teeth ache. This brat really knew how to push his luck. He truly wished Qin Meng could be here to hear this...
With that thought in mind, General Chen snorted coldly. "Military secrets must not be divulged!"
Jing Yi said, "But I'm his... husband! Even I can't know?"
General Chen shook his head ruthlessly and fell silent again.
Inwardly, Jing Yi began calling him Fahai. Good thing he did not like that Major Qin, or General Chen's attitude would have been downright infuriating!
It was not as if he truly wanted to get to the bottom of things. He mainly wanted to use banter to ease the pressure General Chen was putting on him.
Most of the time, Jing Yi did not care about saving face when profit was involved. But why was he so good at putting on airs? If he truly did not care at all, what was the point of pretending? In essence, he was a very proud person. He could tear off his own dignity for the sake of profit, but he could never accept being forced into losing face! Earlier, in front of so many people, he had not hesitated to throw a tantrum and make a scene. Yet now, he absolutely could not accept being frightened witless by General Chen, shrinking back and making a complete fool of himself. He had to endure even if he could barely endure it. This was a matter of principle; there could be no compromise.
"All right, then. I won't ask for now." Jing Yi put on a wronged, melancholy expression, then settled for the next best thing. "It's boring just sitting here. How about we listen to some music?"
No one paid him any attention.
Jing Yi cheerfully opened his personal terminal, found his music favorites, randomly selected a song, and acted first before asking permission.
It was a piece of intensely strange, violent music, similar to Earth's death metal.
There was not only sound, but visuals as well.
The band was called Death's Pact. There were five members in total, all with stark black-and-white face paint and long hair that they whipped around as they sang. At the most intense parts, they smashed their instruments with loud cracks. The lead singer in particular was utterly insane, swinging a guitar-like instrument into his own forehead with a smack. The instrument immediately shattered. Blood ran down his face, yet he did not care in the slightest, still howling as he flung his mop-like long hair around. He was more crazed than someone high on drugs.
Jing Yi's heart clenched, and his pupils dilated...
Poor thing. General Chen had failed to intimidate him, yet this band's performance style had scared him senseless.
General Chen across from him was also dumbfounded. No longer stingy with his words, he roared at Jing Yi, "Turn it off, now! What kind of taste is that? What the hell is this stuff?!"
Jing Yi hurriedly turned it off. He had no memories of this sort of thing, so how was he supposed to know that the original owner, that little fairy, had such unconventional taste in music? Still unwilling to believe it, he picked a few more songs and played them, only to discover in despair that the original owner had been remarkably devoted in his musical preferences. There was not a single listenable song!
General Chen had been driven beyond temper by Jing Yi. After roaring at him several times, he simply told him to stop choosing. General Chen opened his own terminal and selected a song from his favorites. As the general with a distinguished record listened to classic old songs popular decades ago, he felt endless weariness in his heart—had he gotten a hole in his brain by letting this menace onto his personal vehicle?
With a wife like this, all he could do was let out a long sigh for his beloved subordinate.
The guard was young. He had to listen to old-fashioned, outdated songs the entire way, and for safety reasons, he could not even wear earplugs. The agony of it was beyond description.
Then he noticed that Jing Yi seemed to be listening with great interest the whole time, occasionally tapping the beat against his thigh with his fingers... Instantly, his respect soared. In the guard's mind, his assessment of Jing Yi now leaned more toward, "He has depths hidden within him."
At the very least, he was definitely not the embroidered pillow, useless idiot the internet kept claiming he was.
He really knew how to win people over!
And so, with songs drifting through the air the entire way, they arrived at the military interstellar airport. Then they boarded General Chen's private aircraft, left Mi Star, and flew toward Gold Star.
