General Chen watched as the two plates of food were nearly snatched clean, then stopped dwelling on it and split the remaining dozen-odd pieces of insect meat from each dish with his wife. The moment he took his first bite, he could not help pausing. He casually gave Qin Meng and Yang Chun each an Iron Sand Palm to the back of the head. "You brats!"
What he meant was, something this delicious, and you did not know to save more for this old man? Do you have any manners at all?!
Neither of the thick-skinned brats paid him any mind. Hit us if you want. Leaving you a few pieces already counts as respecting our elders. Otherwise, put those dishes in the military cafeteria! If that pack of animals caught sight of them, we would take your surname if they left you even a scrap of meat!
Ever since this guy called Grey Eagle had walked in, Jing Yi had keenly noticed that everyone's attention had focused entirely on him.
The general and his wife were beaming. Even Yang Chun, though he seemed to be at daggers drawn with Grey Eagle on the surface, clearly had a very good relationship with him—probably the kind shared by bad friends... And it was not just everyone else. Even Jing Yi himself had given Grey Eagle his full attention.
He clearly had an utterly ordinary, unremarkable face. He had not said much, either; after sitting down, he had not even greeted anyone, only burying his head in food after food after food. Put nicely, his movements could be called bold and forthright. Put badly, they were simply crude! Yet he somehow possessed a special charm, as though he were a source of light, his presence impossible to ignore...
It was Jing Yi's first time encountering someone with this sort of "star quality" in real life. His interest immediately rose, and he sat across from him, openly studying him from every angle. Grey Eagle only knew how to keep his head down and eat, so Jing Yi was not worried about being rude. He was thoroughly brazen about it.
Just as he was engrossed in watching, the unremarkable fellow across from him suddenly raised his head, and their gazes collided. In that instant, Jing Yi felt as though he had been targeted by a predator. That gaze, as if it were looking at a dead thing... He could not stop himself from shuddering into silence!
To Jing Yi, it felt like an eternity, but only three seconds passed in the outside world before that freak across from him curled his lips and gave him a toothy grin. Then, as though nothing had happened, he lowered his head and went back to eating, leaving Jing Yi to sit there glaring helplessly once he recovered, rage surging through him.
What the fuck was wrong with this guy?! His first impression was that his husband was definitely the biggest bastard under heaven.
First Clash~~
After being "intimidated," Jing Yi was once again casually ignored by the man codenamed Grey Eagle.
Until the meal was over.
"Are you full?" Madam Chen looked at him kindly. There was nothing left on the table by then. "If not, I'll make another two dishes!" It had worked out by sheer luck. To entertain Jing Yi and make him give up that terrifying insect meat, Madam Chen had deliberately prepared several extra dishes. Yet of course, nothing could stop Jing Yi from bringing the insect meat to the table... She had thought so much leftover food would go to waste, but Qin Meng had happened to return so suddenly.
This was fate!
"I'm full, no need," Grey Eagle said, once more flashing two rows of gleaming white teeth. "Madam, your cooking is getting better and better! Especially those two plates of fried meat—what kind of meat was that again? The energy content was almost on par with A-grade beast meat!"
Madam Chen hurriedly waved her hands. "I can't take credit for that. Those two dishes were made by Xiao Yi." She shot Grey Eagle a teasing glance and introduced him. "There, this is Xiao Yi. You were away on a mission, so you probably didn't know that he just married Qin Meng, Major Qin... Qin Meng is a lucky boy! Look at this, the first time they meet, and he has already given him such a big surprise... Everyone knows you picky brat has the fussiest mouth."
Then, regardless of Qin Meng's expression, she turned to introduce Grey Eagle to Jing Yi. "This is Grey Eagle. He's a very capable man, and like Qin Meng, one of our general's most valued subordinates. You're both young, and since you'll be living here, you'll run into each other often. Don't be so formal."
Madam Chen meant well, but the "friendship" between these two young men, who had just formed a grudge against each other, did not develop according to her script.
Jing Yi had originally thought, why should he bother arguing with a crude soldier? The man risked his life in battle and was, at least, a hero. No matter how strong his combat ability was, he might not understand the ways of ordinary people. Besides, Jing Yi would be leaving in a few days and would not have much to do with him. Since he was on someone else's turf, it was better to keep the peace!
But he was soon enraged again by that bastard across from him.
Grey Eagle was openly appraising him.
From head to toe, not a single inch was spared.
Though he did not say a word and showed no unnecessary expression, his eyes were simply too expressive—deep and dazzling, as though they could speak. At least, Jing Yi saw a sentence in them: "Weak as a chick, and prancing around like a little fox spirit. This is supposed to mean Qin Meng is lucky? What a joke! In my opinion, he's downright pitiful!"
Jing Yi was so angry he could not speak.
He wanted to turn hostile on the spot, but that freak across from him had said everything with his eyes. If Jing Yi imagined a whole pile of nonsense and then started a fight, he would have no grounds for it! Jing Yi would bet that if he really slammed the table, it would be exactly what the other man wanted. Grey Eagle would surely put on a disgusting innocent face, and the onlookers would be fooled into seeing Jing Yi as an inexplicably hysterical troublemaker.
