For example, had you ever seen a provincial governor personally attend the wedding of a subordinate city mayor's son, then scheme and maneuver around that mayor?
It was baffling!
He deeply felt that he still had a long way to go before becoming a properly enlightened Mi Star person!
If General Chen had known about Jing Yi's muttering, he would definitely have smiled dismissively—what was with all that nonsense? Did Qin Zhengyu dare fall out with him completely? That ungrateful brat was shrewd. The reason he had kept Jing Yi hanging before was that he wanted to continue observing him. Heaven helped those who helped themselves; Jing Yi knew to find his own solutions instead of merely idling away and waiting to die, which showed he was not a hopeless idiot. This "prospective mother-in-law" was satisfied, so naturally he would protect him.
Early the next morning, General Chen had Yang Chun personally take Jing Yi to Qin Meng's former residence.
It was not far from the Admiral Mansion; it only took a little over ten minutes by hovercar. The surrounding area was home to the families of military officers at the rank of colonel and above, and the environment was excellent. With so many families living there, it was lively and full of life—far more so than the lofty, one-of-a-kind Admiral Mansion. It naturally lacked some of the everyday bustle Jing Yi had known on Earth, but it was more than enough. The moment he got out of the car and looked around, Jing Yi immediately fell in love with the place.
Yang Chun introduced it to him. "This military family residential complex has twenty-seven apartment buildings, more than a thousand households, and over four thousand permanent residents. See over there? That more childlike-looking building is the supporting kindergarten. Next to it are the elementary school and middle school. There's also a cafeteria, parking lots, and other facilities over there. It's quite complete, so living here should basically be convenient. If there really is anything inconvenient, contact me and I'll help you solve it."
Jing Yi nodded in agreement.
Yang Chun continued, "Qin Meng lived in Building Seven, Room 135. He was too busy, so he rarely interacted with the neighbors. I imagine the neighbors knew him—he was a celebrity, after all—but probably only knew of him. If you like, remember to get better acquainted with the people around you. It won't do any harm."
Then, with remarkable patience, he went over the dozen or so neighboring households upstairs, downstairs, and next door, as well as several families in the military housing complex that Jing Yi needed to watch out for. Finally, he summarized, "I was afraid you wouldn't remember, so I organized everything into a document and sent it to your personal terminal. Remember to check it."
Jing Yi looked at him with some emotion. Over the past several days, Yang Chun had truly helped him a great deal. He reminded Jing Yi of those warm and enthusiastic friends back on Earth. Jing Yi had never expected that beneath Yang Chun's stern face lay such a gentle and friendly heart.
"Thank you. Thank you so much."
"No need to be polite. Qin Meng and I were good brothers..." Yang Chun glanced at Jing Yi, then quickly looked away and pinched his ear. "By the way, I wanted to ask what you planned to do next. Study? Work?"
Jing Yi was busy familiarizing himself with the route and did not notice Yang Chun's look. He replied, "I looked into the assets the Jing Family gave me. They're too scattered, and most of them are on Mi Star. Since I'll be settling on Gold Star in the future, managing them remotely would be very inconvenient. So I'm consulting experts in this field to see whether they can assess those businesses, sell off the unprofitable ones, reorganize the rest, and consolidate them before moving them to Gold Star. That way they'll be closer to me and easier to manage. What do you think?"
Yang Chun nodded. "I'm not very good at business, but I can introduce you to someone extremely capable in this area. Assessment, consolidation, relocation—I think it's best left to someone trustworthy. Otherwise, the moment you stop keeping a close eye on them, those people might strip you to the bone."
Jing Yi's eyes lit up. He said gratefully, "That would be wonderful! I was just worried I couldn't find anyone reliable. Honestly, if possible, I don't want to return to Mi Star. I'm afraid of running into people I dislike... You've really helped me out enormously!"
"It's nothing. I'll contact Fan Qiao in a moment. Just tell him whatever you need."
They took the elevator up, found Room 135, and opened the door. Inside was a simple duplex layout, with around ten rooms upstairs and downstairs in total. It was cold and empty. Clearly, Qin Meng had rarely lived here while he was alive. Jing Yi felt that it was practically a finely decorated model home; unless one looked closely, there was no sign that anyone had ever lived there.
That could not have been better.
He had no real feelings for Qin Meng, his husband. Now that he was moving into the place, if Qin Meng's presence had been too strong, it would have felt like living in a secondhand home left behind by a stranger who had died. No matter how fearless he was, it would have made him uncomfortable.
But now, the place was like a blank sheet of paper. What he wrote or drew on it in the future would be entirely up to him. Perhaps because he had grown up an orphan, Jing Yi was deeply attached to the concept of "home." As soon as he had made some money, he had immediately bought a small house. He no longer had to share a room or even a bed with anyone else; he had a little world of his own. There, he had absolute control. Every piece of furniture and decoration had been designed and gradually added by him personally. In his own home, even if he was too lazy to get dressed, no one could point fingers at him. To him, "home" was an absolutely safe harbor.
