Background / History
General Chen was Qin Meng's direct superior and a longtime protector of the young officer. When Qin Meng was publicly presumed dead, Chen opposed Qin Zhengyu's attempt to finalize Qin Meng and Jing Yi's marriage through the Qin family's private genetic institute. He demanded an impartial military retest before the Qin Family could access Qin Meng's stored genetic material. 9
He took Jing Yi to Gold Star after the wedding, initially treating him with suspicion and deliberately pressuring him to assess his character. Chen later arranged Jing Yi's mental-power testing, hoping the result would reveal a redeeming quality for Qin Meng's spouse, then housed Jing Yi at his own residence for surveillance and protection. 12 14 16 18
Chen knew that Qin Meng had survived and was operating under the identity Grey Eagle. He kept Qin Meng's staged death classified while Qin infiltrated the Reverse Order pirate organization, then assigned Qin's former team to help locate and destroy its remaining bases. 22 31 After Reverse Order was eliminated, Chen personally received Qin and revealed his survival only to commanders who had been deliberately kept uninformed. 92
As Jing Yi's accomplishments became undeniable, Chen shifted from guarded observation to active support. He protected Jing from Qin Zhengyu's pressure, enabled him to move into Qin Meng's former residence, and later recognized the military importance of Jing's New Energy Cards and mental-strength research. 36 49 318
During the political crisis surrounding the leaked Plan Document, Chen submitted Qin Meng's intelligence to Military Headquarters, supported Qin's participation in high-level strategy discussions, and shielded him from political backlash by attaching other staff officers' names to Qin's proposal for a new federal system. 345 348 352
Appearance
General Chen is a graying, broad-shouldered military man whose bearing is shaped by a lifetime in uniform. He wears three golden sunflower insignia on his epaulets and carries an intimidating presence that unsettles even experienced soldiers. 8 53
- Usually wears military uniforms, including in his own home. 53
- Has broad shoulders, long legs, and little change to his physique despite his age. 53
- His stern gaze and battlefield aura can silence an entire gathering. 9
- Looks noticeably more approachable in the smoky-gray Tang suit Jing Yi tailored for him, though he finds its soft silk fabric unfamiliar. 53
Personality
General Chen is blunt, disciplined, and deeply contemptuous of political theater. He dismisses empty bureaucratic displays and reacts aggressively when Qin Zhengyu's actions threaten Qin Meng's future. 8 9 His strictness is tempered by a strong instinct to protect capable juniors, particularly Qin Meng and, eventually, Jing Yi. 36 352
Though he maintains a severe military exterior, Chen is mischievous in private. He sulks when ignored by Madam Chen, eagerly eats Jing Yi's pastries while pretending to criticize them, and becomes comically resentful when Qin Meng wins a lottery prize that he himself has never won. 53 55 He also enjoys bullying Qin Meng through trivial displays of seniority, such as leaving him standing during private discussions. 381
