After Gerard handed Suzaku over to Ajax, he exchanged a few words with him, then escorted Xu Xi into a car.

Xu Xi got into the second car. Besides the driver, two soldiers in camouflage uniforms and face paint sat inside. They were the ones who had trained laser sights on Suzaku earlier. They looked relaxed, chewing gum. They even managed to smack their gum obnoxiously.

Xu Xi was small and looked a little frail, hardly a match for his threat rating. With tape over his mouth and cuffs on his wrists and ankles, the two men hadn't bothered putting a black hood on him.

Xu Xi's gaze settled on a small black bag.

"Yours?" one of them asked.

Xu Xi nodded.

The man picked up the bag and unzipped it, revealing a stack of long-obsolete discs.

"2000 Everyday English Words."

"Crazy English."

"Master 100 Sentences and Travel Across America."

He pulled out the discs, read their titles, and tossed each one aside.

Xu Xi smiled.

The tape over his mouth was actually a tissue disguised with Texture Surprise, and he held a razor blade in his mouth. The handcuffs and ankle cuffs had been tampered with too. A little force would break them open.

Gerard had been careless. He hadn't checked closely.

In the lead car, Gerard was in a good mood. He had captured Xu Xi and delivered another test subject to the Workshop. Salesmen had quotas to meet.

Suddenly, he heard brakes screech.

The car behind them fishtailed and stopped by the roadside.

"What happened?"

A bad feeling gripped Gerard. He told his bodyguard, "Go take a look."

After a pause, he added, "Be careful."

The bodyguard drew his gun, took off the safety, and approached the rear car slowly.
