A Man in Marvel, Working for the System
It didn't take long for Geralt and Nancy to meet up with George and Beth.
George and Beth had each brought a male companion.
George's companion was Ace, a third-rate cook at Claw Restaurant. No one knew his last name. He was a good-looking young man obsessed with mystical mumbo jumbo, though he acted a little strangely.
One thing was certain: Ace wasn't George's type.
Besides, George had a mild father complex.
Every boyfriend she'd had was more than ten years older than her.
Beth's companion was Ned Nixon, a dark-skinned guy with naturally curly hair. He liked Nancy and was actively pursuing her. Given Nancy's state of mind, Ned would probably have had a chance to kiss her if Geralt hadn't come along.
Beth hadn't planned to bring a date, but once Ned learned Nancy would be at the party, he bought his way into the role with a luxury lipstick.
The kid just wouldn't give up!
Geralt wasn't necessarily that into Nancy. But not wanting the food in his bowl was one thing; letting someone else reach in and take it was another.
Men were like that.
On that point, immature and mature men acted remarkably alike.
Human nature, perhaps.
Ned clearly felt Geralt's hostility. He was sending plenty of his own right back.
But Nancy kept casting gentle looks at Geralt, boosting him at every turn. Ned never stood a chance.
The barn sold drinks, alcoholic and otherwise. Most people there weren't old enough to drink, but who cared? That only made it more exciting.
