"Thank you," Matt said hastily.
Druin, one of the outdoor rescue experts, said, "I'll find us something to eat."
The medium asked, "Won't that be too dangerous?"
"We're no good at fighting monsters, but we know a thing or two about surviving outdoors," Druin said with a smile.
Druin turned to Geralt. "Words can't repay what you've done. We'll just do what we can. We won't cause any trouble."
"All right." Geralt nodded.
He had a reputation to maintain: a man of action, not words.
Five minutes passed.
The three outdoor rescue experts returned with wild fruit, mushrooms, and fresh water carried in broad leaves.
They used the water to make dehydrated vegetable soup, adding the fresh mushrooms.
A pot of steaming vegetable soup brought tears to Daniel's eyes, despite all the delicacies he had tasted.
The most delicious food in the world wasn't truffles worth their weight in gold, black caviar, or even goose barnacles, hailed as "the devil's delicacy"—
It was hunger.
When you were hungry enough, anything that filled your stomach was the most delicious food in the world.
Druin used half a nutshell as a bowl and served Geralt some soup, along with two wild fruits: one red, one green. They gleamed enticingly in the firelight.
Geralt stared at Druin.
He took neither the soup nor the fruit.
"Uh... it's just ordinary soup and wild fruit. If you don't want any, that's fine." Druin looked embarrassed and turned to leave.
"Wait." Geralt pointed at one of the fruits. "Eat it."
The others sensed something was wrong and turned their attention toward them.
The other two members of the Outdoor Rescue Expert Team came over.
"What's wrong?" one of them asked.
"This gentleman thinks there's something wrong with the fruit..." Druin said helplessly.
He looked thoroughly wronged.
