"Nice decor," Geralt said.
It wasn't his style, though.
The interior featured plenty of dark wood, antique furniture, and period ornaments. The whole place felt steeped in history.
Most young people would probably just call it old-fashioned.
"Thanks," Megan said with a smile. Her grandfather had chosen the decor and furniture himself, putting a great deal of thought into it. She happened to share his tastes.
The more she thought about how she had considered selling the house, the guiltier she felt.
Through Spirit Sight, Geralt saw black mist, almost solid, pouring from upstairs and the basement entrance.
A normal person living in a place like this for a week would either go mad or die. Anyone who did neither was anything but normal.
"What a headache."
Geralt scratched his head and asked Megan, "What's the layout upstairs?"
"Eight bedrooms, four bathrooms, a study, and a large attic."
"And the basement?"
"A pile of junk and all sorts of clutter. There's also a locked wooden door."
"Have you been through it?"
"No. It has an old U-shaped brass padlock, and I can't find the key." Megan shook her head. "Besides, the basement's poorly ventilated and stuffy, and there's a sour smell that makes me feel sick. I usually stay out unless I have to go down."
"Right. Let's take a look." After a moment's thought, Geralt asked, "Are there lights down there?"
"Yes, but they're dim."
"You have flashlights, right? One each."
Faulty wiring was common in old houses. Megan had flashlights and a portable lamp ready.
The basement entrance was in the living room. Behind the door, a wooden staircase ran straight down, creaking underfoot in a way that made their skin crawl.
Geralt led the way.
