In Marvel, I Work for the System

After collecting everything of value, Geralt finally approached the cell holding the unlucky captive.

The cell had an ordinary human lock.

The irony was hard to miss.

"Step back," Geralt told the captive.

Then he shot the lock off.

Geralt took out a glow stick and handed it to the medium.

"It's you." By its light, the medium recognized Geralt's face.

That was awkward.

He had been one of the people who looked down on Geralt.

"Thank you," the medium said sincerely.

"Thank me later. Follow me out of here now," Geralt said.

"I'm hungry. I can't walk," Daniel said.

He had been locked up for so long with nothing but water to drink.

"That's fine." Geralt glanced at him coolly. "You can stay."

Daniel's mouth twitched, but he followed the others out of the cave.

Sometimes, you never knew your limits until someone pushed you.

Geralt found a clearing. "We'll stay here until dawn. Build a fire."

They were in a jungle. Firewood was plentiful.

A fire sprang to life.

Everyone sat around it.

Then Daniel's errand boy edged up to Geralt and spoke quietly.

"Uh... sir..."

He probably had no idea what to call Geralt.

He wasn't hesitating out of embarrassment.

He was afraid.

After all, could an ordinary man drive off that many monsters alone?

And Geralt had kept a cold expression the whole time.

He looked unapproachable.

It wasn't that Geralt thought himself above them. He just knew some people would take a mile if you gave them an inch.

Geralt glanced over and caught Daniel and his girlfriend Haley watching them in secret. He understood at once.

"What is it?" Geralt asked.

"We haven't eaten in two days. Do you have any... We're not asking for it free.
