Rebecca was careless by nature and never noticed anything strange about Geralt.
After finishing his apple pie, Geralt searched for Roman Realty on his laptop.
Roman Realty was virtually unknown in supernatural circles, but in real estate, it was both famous and mysterious.
Famous because Roman Realty had fewer than ten employees, yet its annual sales ran into the hundreds of millions.
Mysterious because few knew how Roman Realty managed it, and the handful who did refused to talk.
Cerberus came over. "Roman Realty, huh..."
His tone was wistful.
"You know them?" Geralt asked, surprised.
Was I the one out of the loop?
Looking at Luke's photo on the screen, Cerberus said, "I met this kid twenty-odd years ago. His dad was a half-baked Demon Hunter, and his mom had real talent. Shame... How do you know him?"
"He posted this job."
"Oh." Cerberus said, "So he hasn't given up..."
Shame about what? Given up on what?
I hate it when someone stops halfway through a story.
"Best not to get involved in his business," Cerberus added after a pause.
"Why?" Geralt asked.
"Those waters run too deep."
Her face was pale, her eyes bloodshot, and dark circles hung beneath them. Staring at the haggard woman in the mirror, Melinda crouched down, covered her face, and sobbed.
Despair.
Helplessness.
Six months earlier, Melinda's husband, Robert, had decided to move the whole family to Black Pine Town to start a new business.
Melinda had never even heard of Black Pine Town. It was some little town out in the sticks. She objected at first, but her husband insisted. After several arguments, she reluctantly gave in.
At least their new house was nice.
It was a two-story redbrick house with an attic, a basement storage room, a garage, and a small yard.
