Without a word, Geralt drew his Demon Hunter Gun and chambered a round.
He aimed at the bushes.
A figure slowly stood with both hands raised.
"I mean no harm..." the figure said.
"It's you." Geralt sounded surprised.
It was Kara.
"So you were faking that weakness earlier?" Geralt asked.
"Yes," Kara answered.
"Why are you following me?" Geralt asked.
He kept his gun trained on her.
"My name is Kara White. David White, the missing man, is my younger brother," Kara said grimly. "Those rich bastards only care about their heir. They don't care who else lives or dies. I just want to save my brother."
Geralt watched Kara until she grew uneasy, then said slowly:
"If I remember right, David White is an only child. Are you two from a blended family?"
"I'll give you one more chance to come up with a better story."
What a psycho, Kara cursed inwardly.
Most people focused on Daniel. Who cared about David?!
Was he just bluffing?
Maybe, maybe not. Kara couldn't tell from Geralt's expression.
One thing was certain: if he caught her lying again, any chance of an agreement was gone—
Fool him once, and he wouldn't trust her again.
After a brief hesitation, Kara said, "I lied about that. Have you heard of Demon Hunters?"
Geralt said, "Uh..."
Susan had called Geralt "Mr. Winchester" in the Gates Group conference room. Kara must have heard it too. So why hadn't the name Winchester meant anything to her?
Was the Winchester name not famous enough, or was Kara a novice herself?
Geralt rubbed his nose. "Uh... I know a thing or two."
Kara said, "Well, I'm a Demon Hunter, though I haven't been one long. For reasons I can't explain, I have to find Daniel Gates. It's important!"
Geralt smiled.
