Before the royal palace, Donquixote Doflamingo stood at the edge of the terrace, watching that golden figure fly toward him like a meteor.
"Fuffuffuffu, Louis—no... Dawn. I knew you would come, but I didn't expect you to arrive so quickly."
His fingers twitched slightly. The string clone beside him scattered into countless fine threads that shot into the sky, weaving together in midair and covering the entire heavens.
Dawn landed on the terrace, glanced at the Birdcage taking shape, and shook his head.
"Trapping someone stronger than yourself in a cage is not a good idea. What surprises me, though, is that you didn't run away like last time."
"Run? Fuffuffuffuffu..."
The corners of Doflamingo's mouth stretched to his ears. He tipped his head back toward the gloomy sky and let out a wild laugh.
This sky was just like it had been eighteen years ago, on the day he shot his father dead. That foolish father—an idiot who had abandoned his status as a Celestial Dragon and taken his family down to suffer among the commoners.
Doflamingo suddenly recalled the story that idiot had told him—the legend of "D," the natural enemy of the gods.
His smile vanished. Looking at Dawn, he asked for no apparent reason:
"Herman Dawn, are you a D as well?"
An almost imperceptible flicker passed through Dawn's eyes.
"D? Ordinarily, I can't be bothered answering questions even for someone about to die. But today, I'll make an exception."
He raised an arm, and viscous darkness rose from him.
Doflamingo fell silent for several seconds, then laughed, his shoulders trembling.
"Fuffuffuffuffu... I never expected you to have hidden yourself so deeply. Those five old fools have been completely kept in the dark by you!"
After the laughter subsided, black-red lightning erupted from both of them
