The door was flung open and quickly shut again, bringing in a faintly cool breeze that slightly dispelled the stuffy heat indoors. Lafitte hurried in, shattering the suggestive atmosphere within.
The usual elegant smile on his face had been replaced by a barely perceptible gravity. His sharp gaze swiftly settled on Dawn by the round table. Ignoring the curious and dissatisfied looks cast his way by the women, he strode forward, bowed slightly, and presented a thick stack of densely written contracts and several papers marked as highly classified intelligence with both hands.
Dawn raised his eyelids but did not reach out to take them. He merely hooked a slender finger casually through the air.
In an instant, every sheet in Lafitte's hands seemed to lose all weight. They floated lightly free of his control and hovered before Dawn, arranged in a neat row as though drawn by invisible threads.
Dawn's gaze swept rapidly over the contracts and the classified information obtained through hypnotic interrogation. His eyes remained calm and unruffled until he finished reading the final page. Only then did he nod in satisfaction, a pleased curve appearing at the corner of his lips.
