Background / History

Crippled Monkey is an orphan who was given his derogatory name by Steward Zhou because of his lame right leg and skinny build. When Chen Family members chose subordinates, he was left behind while stronger servants were selected; the original Chen Fan regarded him as an embarrassment and never even asked his name. 1

He received three years of servant training through the Chen Family, including lessons on common Strange Entities. After training, he was given one Eerie Stone in an unsuccessful attempt to become a Cultivator; unlike a few other servants, he displayed no change afterward. 5

Despite being offered a reward not to accompany Chen Fan into exile at Station No. 37, Crippled Monkey followed him into the Wasteland. He states that Chen Fan had saved him from a worse fate and vows to go—and die—wherever his young master does. 1

Appearance

Crippled Monkey is a thin, poorly dressed manservant with a visibly lame right leg. Though his disability affects his gait, he remains remarkably capable during strenuous work.

Crippled Monkey is fiercely loyal to Chen Fan, initially placing his young master's future and safety above his own life. Chen Fan's changed treatment of him restores his confidence; he comes to believe that the exile is part of a larger plan to reclaim the Chen Family. 1

Crippled Monkey scouts for travelers before the first Eternal Night and is nearly stranded outside the station. Chen Fan leaves the safety of the Eerie Fire to carry him back, cementing their partnership. 1 2

He witnesses Chen Fan construct a Level 1 Beast Trap and identifies him as an awakened Builder. Crippled Monkey urges Chen Fan to return to the Chen Family, but Chen Fan instead chooses to build an independent foundation in the Wasteland. 3

Beast Trap Hunts

Crippled Monkey becomes the killing half of Chen Fan's trap-hunting system: Chen Fan retrieves trapped creatures with hemp ropes while Crippled Monkey delivers spear strikes and recovers Eerie Stones. Their coordination allows them to kill thirty-seven Monkey-Head Ghosts in one night. 7 8

During a later wilderness hunt, he kills Maggot Fiends, processes the corpses, and pulls an overloaded cart through heavy rain for nearly two hours. 14 15
