"Wait..." It was the first time Cheng Hai had heard that Zhang Yang knew medicine, let alone that he treated people. The news hit him like a bombshell. "Since when did you learn medicine? You've treated someone?"

Yang Su was stunned too. In a single evening, she had learned that Zhang Yang could do far more than she had imagined, and each revelation sounded more far-fetched than the last. It felt like she was listening to a tall tale.

"Dad..." Cheng Dongxue took over and explained everything from beginning to end. "That's what happened. Zhang Yang taught himself Traditional Chinese Medicine."

For now, Cheng Dongxue had accepted Zhang Yang's story that he had taught himself medicine.

Cheng Hai fell silent. He might not believe Zhang Yang, but he could not doubt Cheng Dongxue. Her relationship with the family had grown strained because of Zhang Yang, but she would not lie to him.

It was too much for Cheng Hai and Yang Su to take in at once. They needed time to process it.

"Let's leave it for tonight. We'll think it over," Cheng Hai said after a pause. Zhang Yang felt more and more like a stranger to him—so unfamiliar that he hardly recognized him.

That suited Zhang Yang just fine. He did not want to discuss it anymore.

Though he had revealed plenty about himself tonight, it was still hard to win Yang Su's trust, much less get her to treat him kindly.

Her hostility ran deep. Changing that would take time and opportunity, and Zhang Yang already had a plan: distance made the heart grow fonder.

That was why he had chosen to buy a house instead of rushing to start a business. He wanted to leave the Cheng family home and get out of Yang Su's sight.
