No one knew a son better than his mother. Liu Mei knew Zhang Yang's nature: he was strong and stubborn. His marriage to Cheng Dongxue was proof. He had said he would not divorce her, and despite all the bullying he had endured in the Cheng Family, he had held firm.
Zhang Yang had said that one day, people would see him in a new light. Now, it seemed, he had made it happen.
So when Zhang Yang said he had bought the car for Liu Mei, he meant it. If she refused to drive it, he would take it back to Long'ao and let it rot at home.
"Xiao Yang, what about you two?"
"Mom, don't worry about us. We'll have the bodyguard pick us up."
"A bodyguard?"
Another surprise. When had Zhang Yang hired a bodyguard? Did he need one? Were that many people out to harm him?
"Mom, don't worry about us. We've got legs, and we can find a ride once we leave Wolong Villa. Be careful on the road."
After they had seen the house, Zhang Yang urged Liu Mei to head home. She was out of practice behind the wheel, and he did not want her staying until dawn.
Zhang Yang did not want his mother going to the Cheng Family home and enduring their bullying alongside him. It would only make her suffer. For years, he had tried to keep her away from that house, unwilling to let her stay there even for a moment.
The mother cared for her son, and the son cared for his mother. They had always had only each other.
Liu Mei got into the new car and drove away. Watching her go, Zhang Yang sighed. Their lives were finally about to change in a meaningful way.
