The group moved only a few steps before reaching the stall of the vendor who had called them over. A woman was minding it now, probably his wife.
"This is the place. Have a look. With this many stones, there's bound to be one you like."
Seeing that the man had brought someone to look at stones, the woman perked up and joined in at once.
"Sir, all our stones have been handpicked. I guarantee they're the best."
The woman minding the stall was probably an amateur. If she knew what she was looking at, why would she still be running a stall here instead of making a fortune? She might fool someone else with that line, but she wouldn't fool Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang searched the pile with his eyes. First, the stone had to weigh no more than five kilograms. Second, it had to contain exceptional material. He had no interest in anything ordinary.
He spotted some promising stones, then found the one he wanted. He pointed to a black-skinned stone beside the woman.

At his choice, the vendor and the woman frowned. It looked like he had picked the right stone.
"Are you sure?"
The woman looked startled. She patted the black-skinned stone. It clearly wasn't quarried stone, but one that had sat in stagnant water. Moss had grown on it over the years, and its color had changed.
"What, can't I have it?"
Zhang Yang frowned. The vendor and the woman seemed to know where this stone had come from. Perhaps they had even used it for something.
"Of course you can. But we brought this stone from home. It's good material, so it won't be cheap."
The vendor glanced at Zhang Yang, then at the dozen or so people on the other
