Background / History

Snape is a man from the future who transmigrates into his younger body at Hogwarts in 1976, immediately after calling Lily Evans a “Mudblood” and failing to reconcile with her. Retaining memories of the future, he resolves to change his path, repair his relationship with Lily, and prevent Voldemort’s rise. He adopts “the new ‘Prince’” as his personal declaration of reinvention 1.

He grew up at Spinner’s End with his witch mother, Eileen Prince, and abusive Muggle father, Tobias Snape. After violently confronting Tobias, Snape learns that Eileen is the last Prince and that the family possesses a Gringotts vault inherited through Charon Prince 5 6.

As a Slytherin, Snape was formerly connected to Walpurgis, a school-age reserve group for Death Eaters. He begins distancing himself from Avery, Mulciber, Bellatrix Lestrange, and their ideology, while covertly gathering intelligence on Voldemort and his Horcruxes 2 3 10. After protecting Marlene McKinnon and killing Death Eaters during the Knight Bus attack, he convinces Dumbledore not to hand him over to the Ministry, citing the danger retaliation would pose to his family 8 10.

Snape investigates Tom Riddle’s history through Hogwarts records, Hagrid, Moaning Myrtle, and Slughorn. He deduces that Riddle is Voldemort, which Dumbledore confirms; later, he witnesses Slughorn’s memory concerning Horcruxes 17 19 23 24 42.

Appearance

Snape is thin and wiry, with pale skin, straight greasy black hair, a high hooked nose, and deep dark eyes. After his rebirth, he cuts his hair shorter and begins taking better care of his appearance 1 110.

  • Ebony wand with a dragon-heartstring core 1 95
  • Frequently uses Muggle clothing when operating outside Hogwarts 2 113 148
  • Can alter his appearance with Polyjuice Potion and an Ageing Potion 111 117 148
  • His corporeal Patronus is a giant silver serpent 55

Personality

Snape is calculating, ambitious, and intensely self-directed. He distrusts Dumbledore’s willingness to sacrifice individuals for a larger cause, yet repeatedly works with him when their goals align against Voldemort 16 43 119. He plans several steps ahead, conceals crucial information, and frequently uses deception, intimidation, and leverage to control dangerous situations.

Despite his harshness, Snape demonstrates growing empathy. He protects Lily and Mary from Mulciber’s prank, assists Remus Lupin with Wolfsbane Potion, supports werewolves under Lyka Lupa’s leadership, and risks himself to protect Muggles targeted by Death Eaters 2 123 124 173. He remains capable of extreme measures, including Unforgivable Curses, coercive vows, and memory manipulation 92 106 112.
