Background / History
Grindelwald was a political leader whose stated aim was to reshape the world order. Snape distinguishes his ideology and methods from Voldemort's, arguing that Grindelwald had a clear platform, while Voldemort relied on deception, slaughter, and terror. His former prison, Nurmengard, bore the motto “For the Greater Good.” 146 148
After his defeat and imprisonment, Grindelwald spent decades in the highest tower of Nurmengard. The prison reportedly had no major magical safeguards beyond stone walls and iron bars. In the twentieth year of his confinement, his loyal follower Vinda Rosier reached his open cell after escaping a French Ministry prison; Grindelwald refused to leave with her. 146 147
When Dumbledore fell unconscious and Hogwarts was forced into exile, Snape travelled to Nurmengard seeking Grindelwald's aid. Grindelwald initially dismissed the appeal, but became enraged that Voldemort's pure-blood persecution, Horcruxes, and indiscriminate terror had led people to compare the two Dark wizards. He agreed to help chiefly to prevent Voldemort from overshadowing his own historical legacy. 148 149
Grindelwald left Nurmengard with Snape, adopted a brown-haired middle-aged disguise, and freed Vinda Rosier from the secret prison at Oxta. He then joined the refugees aboard The Founder's Boat and assumed a decisive role in its defense. 149 150 151
Appearance
After decades in Nurmengard, Grindelwald was gaunt and weathered, with prominent cheekbones, silver hair, and mismatched eyes: a faint grayish-blue left eye and an almost milky-white right eye. 148
- His prison-worn appearance could be restored through magic into tailored dark gray, high-collared robes, a white silk shirt, and a black cloak embroidered with silver runes. 149
- He commonly used Human Transfiguration to appear as a tall, brown-haired middle-aged man whose profile resembled a younger Dumbledore. 149 150 184
- When using his Seer ability, both eyes became a deep, uniform milky white. 148
- His transformed appearance was maintained while acting among the Hogwarts refugees under the name “Mr. Green.” 152
Personality
Grindelwald is proud, contemptuous of cowardice, and intensely concerned with the distinction between his legacy and Voldemort's. He views Voldemort's pure-blood supremacy and pursuit of fragmented immortality as crude, intellectually bankrupt, and unworthy of comparison to his own ambitions. 149
He is commanding and self-assured, often treating others as though he naturally holds authority. On The Founder's Boat, he dismissed sentries, summoned the entire population to the dining hall, and issued instructions without waiting for approval. 151 152
Despite his harshness, he shows selective compassion and approval. He freed Vinda Rosier, considered a solution to Nagini's Blood Curse, saved Arthur Weasley, offered to teach Tonks, and took quiet satisfaction in the students' growing courage. 150 153 164 165
Abilities & Skills
Seer Ability
Grindelwald can attempt to perceive a person's past and future through divination.
- His eyes turn entirely milky white while the ability is active. 148
- He was unable to see Snape's origins or future, leaving him confused by Snape's identity. 148
Transfiguration and Concealment
Grindelwald uses advanced transformation and stealth magic with exceptional ease.
- Altered his own height, build, hair, and face to avoid recognition after leaving Nurmengard. 149
- Turned a wooden chair into a shield, then transformed its splinters into vines that restrained Voldemort. 162
- Cast a near-perfect Disillusionment Charm that rendered Snape effectively invisible and guided him by an imperceptible magical tether. 150
- Passed through iron bars and opened rune-sealed doors without conventional unlocking procedures. 150
Fiendfyre Manipulation
Grindelwald commands a cold, sapphire-blue form of Fiendfyre with precision beyond simple destruction.
- Sent blue Fiendfyre through the dining hall to identify and eliminate captured Death Eaters while leaving allied occupants unharmed. 152 153
- Recalled the fire into a dragon-shaped construct that recovered Arthur Weasley alive. 153
- Destroyed Riddle's diary Horcrux when the Fiendfyre swept through the ship. 153
- Countered Voldemort's Fiendfyre by freezing it into an ice sculpture, shattering it, and reshaping the fragments into silver-white lions. 163
Combat Magic
Grindelwald is a highly dangerous duelist capable of facing Voldemort directly.
- Neutralized incoming spells with an invisible force field while landing on The Founder's Boat. 151
- Disarmed Arthur Weasley nonverbally and subdued Augustus Rookwood with effortless wandwork. 162
- Fought Voldemort in the Ministry atrium, using transfiguration, defensive constructs, deep-blue curses, and animated ice creations. 162 163
- Retreated rather than pursue a decisive victory when Voldemort's raw magical output and destructive instincts exceeded his estimates. 163 164
Smoke Flight
Grindelwald can fly without a broom or external aid by transforming part of his body into smoke.
- His lower body becomes coiling gray-white smoke that supports his solid upper body in the air. 170
- Carried Snape and Vinda Rosier through the air from the Scottish mountains to The Founder's Boat. 150 151
- Taught the technique to Snape, who began learning to transform part of his own body into a smoky state. 170
Magical Instruction and Craftsmanship
Grindelwald applies his knowledge to instruction and magical creation.
- His Defense Against the Dark Arts training emphasizes environmental use, rapid counterattacks, and disabling opponents before they can respond. 170
- Offered to train Nymphadora Tonks in her Metamorphmagus abilities and gave her a purple gemstone necklace. 165
- Created an experimental alchemical glass eye for Alastor Moody. 157 175
- Examined the three Deathly Hallows and rejected the notion that possessing them granted mastery over Death or invincible power. 180 186
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wand — used for dueling, Transfiguration, Fiendfyre control, concealment, and complex rune magic. 150 152 162 163
- Purple gemstone necklace — gifted to Nymphadora Tonks after accepting her as a student. 165
- Alchemical glass eye — experimental prosthetic crafted for Alastor Moody. 157
Relationships
- Albus Dumbledore — former adversary with a deep, unresolved shared history; Grindelwald left Nurmengard partly because Dumbledore and Hogwarts were threatened. Their reunion is tense, and Grindelwald remains protective and suspicious when Dumbledore approaches Voldemort. 148 149 184 189
- Severus Snape — recruiter, ally, and later student. Grindelwald respects Snape's bold planning, teaches him smoke flight, and works with him against Voldemort and the Horcruxes. 149 170 178 180 186
- Vinda Rosier — formerly one of his most loyal followers. She once attempted to free him from Nurmengard; after his release, he rescues her from Oxta, though she remains devoted to him rather than accepting freedom. 146 150
- Voldemort — ideological and magical rival. Grindelwald considers Voldemort's pure-blood doctrine, Horcruxes, and reliance on fear contemptible; they duel at the Ministry. 149 162 163
- Nymphadora Tonks — prospective student. Grindelwald saves her from a fall, offers to train her Metamorphmagus ability, and accepts being called “Teacher.” 165
- Nagini — Grindelwald recognizes her and later promises to consider a solution for her Blood Curse. 152 153
- Arthur Weasley — initially disarmed and used to summon Rookwood at the Ministry; later recovered alive by Grindelwald's Fiendfyre after being mistaken for a traitor aboard the ship. 162 153
- Alastor Moody — recipient of Grindelwald's experimental alchemical glass eye. 157 175
