Background / History
Arrival at Kamar-Taj
Strange was once a confident, brilliant surgeon. By the time he reaches Kamar-Taj, his hands tremble uncontrollably, his clothes are ragged, and his former self-assurance has largely disappeared. He has spent his entire fortune on a one-way journey seeking treatment for his hands 48 49.
He questions the Ancient One about Pangborn, a patient whose C7 and C8 spinal damage should have prevented him from walking. When she explains that the soul can repair the body, Strange dismisses her account as absurd. She forces his soul out of his body, overturning his skepticism immediately. He begs for instruction, but she has Mordo throw him out and leaves him in the cold for several days to wear down his arrogance 49.
Training under Mordo and Ren
The Ancient One assigns Mordo to lead Strange’s education and Ren to assist. She deliberately chooses Ren because his overwhelming talent can humble a student accustomed to considering himself a genius. Strange initially questions why someone as young-looking as Ren is teaching him, only to be bound by Ren’s Golden Chain and confronted with effortless spellcasting 48 49.
Ordinary practice produces no results. Ren attributes the blockage to Strange’s ingrained scientific assumptions, pride, and difficulty concentrating with impaired hands. Over Mordo’s objections, Ren takes him to Mount Everest and leaves him there with instructions to open a Portal within two minutes. Strange eventually returns through a Portal of his own, achieving his first breakthrough 49 50.
His learning speed increases sharply afterward. He advances through shields, binding spells, spatial magic, and divine-power weapons, but Ren’s demonstrations repeatedly make his genuine accomplishments seem inadequate. During one lesson, Strange imitates Ren’s fusion of two divine powers and causes an explosion that blackens his face and singes his hair 51 52 54.
Promotion and Battlefield Experience
At Kamar-Taj’s promotion ceremony, Strange faces Mordo in both close-quarters combat and magical combat. His strength, advanced spells, and unexpectedly large magical reserves pressure his teacher, but Mordo exploits openings and wins through experience. Mordo nevertheless promotes him and emphasizes that his training must continue 55 56.
Strange’s pride in the achievement fades after witnessing Ren’s subsequent display. He skips the continuing festivities and returns to training, where Mordo introduces Vishanti Chains 58.
During the Dark Elf invasion, Strange follows Mordo into battle, catches him after Malekith knocks him back, and fights the invading soldiers. Ren later protects him from a Berserker and pulls him to safety before a black-hole grenade triggers devastating explosions in the Mirror Dimension. The experience leaves Strange determined never to provoke Ren 60 63.
Later Service
Two years later, Strange has become comparable to a veteran Master. Ren brings him into the confrontation with Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian while he is on duty. Ebony Maw attempts to use Strange’s life as leverage for an Infinity Stone, but Ren rejects the assumption that Strange is an easily manipulated novice 132 134.
Strange later holds Kamar-Taj’s third-highest position. When the sorcerers lose their connection to cosmic energy, he approaches Mordo and pointedly mentions that Ren has just returned. He also regularly accompanies Ren on business, becoming friendly with several core Avengers 191 193.
Appearance
Strange’s first appearance contrasts sharply with his former image as a successful surgeon: he arrives slightly hunched, unshaven, and dressed like a desperate drifter 48.
- Trembling hands — shake uncontrollably, even while holding a cup of tea 48.
- Hoarse voice — evident when he first asks to meet the Ancient One 48.
- Training-related exhaustion — obsessive early practice leaves his face haggard and his eye sockets sunken 49.
Personality
Strange initially trusts established expertise and scientific explanations while dismissing ideas outside his understanding. His first objection to Ren as an instructor is based on Ren’s youthful appearance. Even after accepting that magic exists, he struggles with lessons that do not fit the scientific framework he knows 49.
His defining strength is persistence. Repeated failures and unfavorable comparisons with Ren undermine his confidence, but he continues practicing and returns to class after each discouraging lesson. Ren comes to respect his willpower, recognizing that Strange repeatedly recovers from having his abilities eclipsed 49 52.
Praise from other sorcerers briefly revives his arrogance, but defeats and battlefield danger make him increasingly respectful toward his teachers. He accepts Mordo’s corrections graciously and later addresses Ren with unusual formality 54 56 64.
