People who brushed past him caught only a fleeting glimpse of golden hair beneath his hat and clownlike makeup.

He moved silently through the streets. Passersby seemed neither to notice him nor to hear a sound from him.

A moment later, he stopped outside a courtyard gate.

"This is the place, right?"

He murmured to himself and slowly raised his head. Beneath the brim of his hat, a cold smile crossed his face.

"It's been a long time."

A gale came howling toward them. The water ahead seemed to boil, countless bubbles rising to the surface.

Their target lay in the middle of that patch of bubbling sea. Above it, clouds churned in the wind. A great storm seemed about to break.

The surging current flung sheets of water into the air, rocking the entire raft violently.
