Almost nothing was known about how to raise Larvitar, then Pupitar, and eventually Tyranitar.

For anyone qualified to own one, a wild Tyranitar from Mt. Silver was a mixed blessing. Its moves, Ability, and temperament might all be wrong for them.

Wild Tyranitar were hardly obedient to begin with. They were Dark-type Pokémon, after all.

Raising Pupitar into Tyranitar posed another challenge. Its Ground typing would change to Dark, and there were questions of growth time and much more besides.

"But whatever happens, Dian, if you can raise a Tyranitar, it should help close the gap between you and Trainers your age."

Lorelai gave Larvitar another cream puff after it finished the first, then took out a particularly advanced-looking Pokémon Pokédex and began searching. "Plenty of League researchers have studied Tyranitar over the years, at least publicly. But there are only a few well-supported papers. I'll send them to you."

She thought for a moment. "Of course, there are other reasons so few people raise Tyranitar. It has too many type weaknesses, which means there's a lot to compensate for. Many of the moves it needs must be learned while it's still a Larvitar or Pupitar. That's the only way to raise a Tyranitar worthy of being called an ace."

Dian suddenly asked, "Has no one studied the moves Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar can learn, or their Egg Moves?"

He had skimmed the papers Lorelei sent him. Nearly all were speculation. Only one connected with what he knew: a paper on the relationship between Type Gems and Larvitar's growth, and on choosing where to evolve Larvitar.

There was nothing at all on their move sets.
