On a rounded bridge spanning the waterways stood a handsome blond young man, taking in the exotic scenery with obvious delight.
At his feet, a Charmander slashed at the air. A closer look revealed a wave of imposing energy coiling around its claws.

A shout came from the other side of the bridge. "Hurry up! The Great Cathedral is about to open."
Allen finally tore his gaze away. "Come on, Charmander."
He glanced at the Charmander practicing Dragon Claw and shook his head helplessly. A Fire-type Pokémon that excelled at Dragon-type moves but couldn't use Fire-type moves—his Charmander had to be one of a kind.
Charmander flicked its tail haughtily, cast a disdainful glance at another Charmander juggling with Ember nearby, then followed Allen.
They were headed for the Great Cathedral at the heart of Alto Mare, the sacred place the people of Alto Mare had built, according to legend, to thank the Infinity Pokémon Latios and Latias.
Though the Great Cathedral had been renovated several times, it retained its original architectural style. Its Ancient Pokémon fossils, distinctive murals, and mysterious machines from a bygone age were especially striking.
All of it drew visitors from across the country and spread the fame of Alto Mare, the City of Water, far and wide.
"The Alto Mare Summer Carnival you've all been waiting for is about to begin! First up is our annual Pokémon water race!"
The live announcement suddenly rang out over Alto Mare.
For a maritime city like Alto Mare, summer was the most important season of the year.
