By the time they quelled the chaos Toyman had caused, evening had fallen. Superman still stood there, a searchlight shining on him from behind.

"Could you get them to turn that off? It's hurting my eyes," the girl said to Superman.

Superman said nothing. A blast of Heat Vision blew out the searchlight.

"Oh, has he been in a bad mood lately?" Roland asked, watching from the Batwing.

"Doesn't look like it." Batman shook his head.

Conner had regained consciousness. He watched Superman through the window, his thoughts unreadable.

"I feel like I don't know anything anymore," the girl said.

"Can I offer you some advice?" Superman said. "Many years ago, a friend of mine ended her life. She had a terminal illness, and she just—well, I suppose you could say she 'freed' herself early."

"I understood her choice—but I couldn't agree with it. I still can't."

"But if you think there's a chance, however small, that someday you might have even one more happy day, take my hand." Superman held out his hand to the girl, and she threw her arms around him, crying.

"Everything will be all right."

"That's really touching," Roland said with a sigh. If that girl were Lois, it'd be even more perfect.

He opened the window and spotted Lois among the reporters covering the story on the ground.

"So that's Superman?" Conner watched him, conflicting emotions flickering in his eyes.

"Yeah. Superman isn't just someone with power." Roland patted Conner on the shoulder. "There are people as strong as him, or even stronger. But there's only one Superman."

"Hmm—"

"All right, let's untie you." Roland undid the kryptonite rope binding Conner and tossed him out of the plane.
