It could still talk after losing its head?
Chen Feng was horrified. He had no idea how to kill a creature that could live without a head.
If he couldn't figure it out, he wouldn't waste time trying.
The Water Ghost lunged for the head on the floor, ready to crush it.
But just then, rustle! Something changed.
At the Landlady's command, the human skins hanging in the third-floor hall sprang to life and flew toward the Water Ghost as though they had minds of their own.
As the saying went, one chopstick snapped easily, but ten bound together held firm.
The Water Ghost could have torn any one skin to shreds. But when hundreds swarmed it at once, they pinned it to the floor, unable to move.
"Shit!"
Chen Feng stood there holding the head, unable to do anything but cheer from the sidelines.
Seeing the snake demon could turn a creature to stone, but the creature needed eyes!
"Get up! Don't you want revenge?"
At Chen Feng's call, the Water Ghost let out a low growl and struggled to rise. But it was too badly injured. Each time it got up, the skins forced it back down.
At full strength, it might have had a chance.
Chen Feng set down the head and drew the heavy-duty telescopic baton he'd swiped from Old Li. He decided to do it himself.
Take out the leader first. If he smashed the Landlady's head, the skins would probably settle down too.
With that thought, Chen Feng swung the baton at the head on the floor.
Crack! Half the Landlady's face burst apart.
"Did... did it work?"
Chen Feng stared at the chunks of flesh on the floor. Suddenly, his vision darkened and weakness washed over him. He turned his head and discovered that a human skin had somehow wrapped itself around his back.
Fuck off!
Chen Feng ripped the skin off and flung it away. As he did, little red lights like fireflies drifted out of it and flew toward the Landlady.
The moment those red lights sank into her, countless crimson shoots of flesh sprouted from her shattered head. It began regenerating at an inhuman speed. The gray-white stone crust on her face flaked away, revealing ruddy skin beneath.
Those lights are healing her?
Chen Feng understood at once. If the Landlady was a mosquito, the skins were her mouthparts. The more strength they drained, the faster she recovered.
Before long, the Landlady had reattached her head. She smiled. "Handsome, we've only met once, but you know me so well. You knew how to get to the third floor, and you even brought my dear departed husband."
Chen Feng gave a bitter smile. He wanted to fight back, but after having his strength drained, he could barely stand. "Is that all you've got, dirty tricks? Fight us fair and square if you dare!"
He sounded indignant as he accused the Landlady of fighting dirty. But the moment she let down her guard, Chen Feng hurled a concealed weapon at her.
"Handsome, you're so naughty. Joy—"
The Landlady caught it, only to find that it was a tear-gas grenade with its pin pulled.
Boom!
The blast knocked the Landlady senseless. Without her control, the skins went still.
The Water Ghost seized its chance, broke free, and lunged to strangle her. This was its last chance. But just as it was about to grab her, the Landlady's figure blurred. She reappeared several meters away.
She can teleport too?
Chen Feng sucked in a breath.
She could command skins to drain her enemies' strength and heal herself. She could kill people from miles away through their dreams. She could even teleport out of danger. How was anyone supposed to beat a monster like that?
The Water Ghost had missed.
The Landlady sent the skins to pin it down again. As they kept draining it, the Water Ghost soon dissolved into a puddle of corpse oil.
[Water Ghost (temporarily subdued) has vanished.] [Wish quest failed!]
"Your turn."
The Landlady advanced on Chen Feng step by step, her high heels clicking softly against the floor.
Chen Feng stared straight at her, fearless. "Come on! Kill me."
You want my life? Take it!
The Landlady looked surprised. "You've got guts."
Chen Feng snorted. Trading one life for information about her was a bargain.
"Next time, give me an immortal cultivation system. I'll cut this monster down with one strike of an immortal sword."
As the Landlady drew closer, Chen Feng's eyelids grew impossibly heavy. At last, he collapsed. Just like the previous times, his skin dried out, turned ashen, and became an empty human-skin husk.
[Save-Load Count: 4]
Chen Feng slowly opened his eyes.
The Landlady, He Ting, said, "Handsome, you don't look well. You'd better find shelter before it rains."
Chen Feng nodded eagerly. "Yeah, yeah!"
"So, want to come inside and wait out the rain?"
"Yes! Of course!" Chen Feng grabbed the Landlady's hand. "I'm homeless and can't afford food. Could you give me a job running the internet café?"
Another prey had taken the bait.
The Landlady felt a surge of Joy, but spoke as if reluctant to say more. "You want to join us?"
"Please, let me join your team."
Chen Feng held her hand and looked at her earnestly.
As he followed the Landlady into the shop, he ran into Old Li and Zhang Ruobing on their way out. Something occurred to him. "Officer, there's something I need to tell you."
Old Li asked, "What?"
Chen Feng said gravely, "Whatever you do, don't go into the water today. You'll die."
Old Li found that ridiculous. "Why would I go into the water for no reason?"
A faint click of the tongue sounded in the air.
Zhang Ruobing said, "What a nutcase. Let's go, Master."
He'd done all he could.
After the last fight, Chen Feng understood that Old Li and the others could offer little help in a battle between monsters. More importantly, the more allies he brought into the boss fight against the Landlady, the more people the skins could drain, making her that much harder to beat.
This time, the Water Ghost and I are enough.
Chen Feng checked the system:
[Water Ghost (temporarily subdued)] [Status: healthy]
Good. The Water Ghost had recovered again, and this time it was at full strength.
Now he only needed to wait for the rain. Then he could summon it ashore.
With his preparations complete, Chen Feng examined the new box.
Serial number XX-01-DKQD. It said, "Climb the road to heaven, sing as you go, and Shrouding the Heavens with a flick of your fingers."
XX—an immortal fantasy system!
Did I really get one?
Chen Feng was overcome with Joy. But when he noticed the 01 in the serial number, his excitement vanished.
Fuck!
It was a Quest System!
Simply put, like the Great Benefactor System and the Great Villain System, it issued quests for Chen Feng to earn points.
But he was about to fight the Landlady to the death. He didn't need some damn points; he needed more fighting power right now.
What good were System Points if he couldn't spend them?
Besides, quests from an Immortal World sounded especially difficult. What if it gave Chen Feng some impossible task like "destroy the Primordial Saint Demon Sect" or "stop the dark upheaval"? How was a mere mortal supposed to manage that?
After thinking it over, Chen Feng chose LS--02-SHSG. This exchange system from history had been with him for a long time, but he'd never picked it because he hadn't had any points.
Now he could finally open it and see how it worked.
He opened the box, and the system prompt appeared right on cue.
[Ding! Congratulations, user. You have successfully activated the Mythic Three Kingdoms System.]
