July 31, six in the evening, Cihang City, Horror Amusement Park.
The heat had faded, and the setting sun bathed his shoulders.
Chen Feng woke on a bench in the Paradise. The moment he opened his eyes, he saw an ugly monster as tall as a building staring at him with bright red eyes.
Holy shit.
Even with his nerves of steel, Chen Feng couldn't help jolting in fright. Only then did he realize it was a false alarm. The red-eyed monster was nothing more than a giant inflatable doll.
That thing looks way too real.
Chen Feng stood and stretched his limbs. This body clearly wasn't his, yet he controlled it as naturally as his own.
The incarnation system really is amazing.
Just then, a clear female voice sounded beside him. "Xiao Hu, you're awake! You suddenly passed out and scared us half to death."
A spicy fragrance wafted into his nose, and Chen Feng narrowed his eyes. According to Liu Xiaohu's memories, the girl speaking to him, her hair tied in a ponytail, was Meng Chengcheng. She was twenty years old and a medium.
A medium communed with gods, spirits, and ghosts, commanding supernatural beings to work magic and bring salvation to the world.
In plain English, she was a practitioner who could speak to the dead and order ghosts and gods around.
Powerful people were popular everywhere. On top of that, Meng Chengcheng was beautiful and full of energy. The line of people pursuing her could stretch from the east end of Cihang City to the west, and Liu Xiaohu was one of them.
Although Meng Chengcheng was devoted to cultivating her mystical arts and had no interest in some bullshit romance, Liu Xiaohu firmly believed that, through tireless efforts like buying her milk tea in autumn and sending her cash gifts on holidays, he would eventually get his goddess to notice him.
Fuck!
Isn't that a fucking simp?
The thought that his incarnation was such a disgusting person nearly made Chen Feng puke.
Seeing that Chen Feng hadn't said a word since waking up, his expression shifting unpredictably, Meng Chengcheng asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
His goddess had taken the initiative to speak to him and fuss over his well-being. If Liu Xiaohu had still been alive, he would have rushed to fawn over her like a dog spotting a bone.
But Chen Feng left her hanging and began patting himself down. "Give me a second."
The most important thing right now was to figure out exactly which rule Liu Xiaohu had triggered to get himself killed.
When I looked through his memories just now, I remember Liu Xiaohu was supposed to have a Visitor Guide on him.
Chen Feng looked down and, sure enough, found a colorful leaflet on the ground:
[Dear visitors, welcome to the Horror Amusement Park! We are dedicated to providing every visitor with the most terrifying, most thrilling experience possible. To ensure your safety, all visitors must obey the following rules. Otherwise, you will bear the consequences. 1: Do not throw away your Visitor Guide. Violating the above rules may trigger unpredictable, dangerous events or even result in injuries of varying severity. Please obey the rules to avoid any unnecessary accidents.]
An anomaly—a monster that killed according to rules.
Clearly, this Visitor Guide laid out the rules of this anomalous area.
Chen Feng tried to piece together Liu Xiaohu's memories.
This mission had begun when the organization discovered a survivor who had escaped from the Horror Amusement Park.
It wasn't as though no one else had escaped from the Horror Amusement Park over the years, but he was the only one who had emerged completely unharmed, neither insane nor ill, and even brought out a souvenir.
The souvenir was a red-eyed monster doll.
After studying it, the organization discovered that writing one's name on a slip of paper and placing it inside the doll would allow the doll to die in one's place when subjected to a fatal attack.
Something that could let a person escape death was indeed as precious as life itself, just as the rules said.
Liu Xiaohu's objective on this mission was to collect ten Game Coins, exchange them for a souvenir, and turn it over to the organization.
To please his goddess, Meng Chengcheng, Liu Xiaohu had secretly slipped the Game Coin he received upon entering the park into her bag, hoping to give her a surprise.
Then he had died, giving his goddess a fright instead.
Chen Feng pressed a hand to his forehead, feeling his intolerance for stupidity flare up.
The second rule in the Visitor Guide explicitly stated that Game Coins were as precious as life itself.
Could you just give away something as precious as your own life?
Simps deserve a miserable death.
Good thing he's already dead. What a satisfying outcome.
Having figured everything out, Chen Feng discreetly retrieved the Game Coin from her bag, then said to Meng Chengcheng, "I'm fine. Where are the others?"
P.E.A.C.D carried out missions in five-person squads, so there should have been three other agents besides the two of them.
Meng Chengcheng extended a slender, delicate hand and pointed toward a nearby lawn. "They're over there smoking."
Following her finger, Chen Feng saw three people standing on the lawn.
One was a handsome young man with his hair tied in a bun at the back of his head. He wore yellow Daoist robes, with a Bagua Mirror hanging on his chest and a Coin Sword slung diagonally across his back. His name was Lin He. He was a Daoist priest and Liu Xiaohu's greatest romantic rival.
Lin He had lost his entire family to an anomalous incident when he was young. A Daoist temple later took him in, and he became a disciple, learning its arts and vowing to one day slay every evil being in the world.
Both parents dead, a heaven-sent blood feud—this guy's got the fucking protagonist template down pat.
Competing with the protagonist for a woman? Xiao Hu, you really were asking to die.
Chen Feng looked at the second man.
He was a burly blond man nearly two meters tall. Despite the summer heat, he wore a black clerical robe with bulging pockets and a cross hanging from a silver chain around his neck.
Haman was a pastor, but he smoked, drank, permed his hair, gambled, and indulged in every vice imaginable. He often asked Liu Xiaohu to lend him money, but Liu Xiaohu always refused.
The last man was middle-aged, with a scar on his face and eyes as sharp as a hawk's. His name was Wu Changshan. He was an exorcist and the captain of the entire squad.
An exorcist, a pastor, a medium, and a Daoist priest.
Chen Feng had figured it out.
Everyone in this squad had special skills.
P.E.A.C.D divided its agents into six tiers based on the number of monsters they had eliminated. From lowest to highest, they were D (1 monster), C (10 monsters), B (100 monsters), A (1,000 monsters), and S (10,000 monsters).
Captain Wu was a Class B Agent. The pastor was a little below him at Class C, while Meng Chengcheng and Lin He were both Class D.
Only Liu Xiaohu was nothing at all. He had never even killed a chicken, let alone a monster.
Normally, a nobody like Liu Xiaohu wouldn't have been qualified to take this mission, but to stick close to his goddess, he had secretly slipped his superiors a considerable sum of money.
The official responsible for assigning missions had been quite surprised, too.
After all, nine out of ten agents sent to the Horror Amusement Park never came back. Carrying out a mission there was no different from putting your life on the line.
Everyone else was desperate to stay away, yet this kid, Liu Xiaohu, was willing to pay to go.
"It's my first time seeing someone so eager to get himself killed."
"I've never seen a request like this in my life."
And so, with a stamp of the official's seal, Liu Xiaohu had successfully slipped into the squad.
