Background / History

The Sealed Ice Emperor

Hai Bodong once roamed the Jia Ma Empire under the feared title of Ice Emperor. Queen Medusa defeated and sealed him, leaving him barely able to muster Dou Ling strength. He could not defeat her even before losing his cultivation 34 38 40.

When Xiao Yan finds him, Hai Bodong is studying a map in an old-fashioned shop. He initially treats the young Three-Rank Alchemist politely, recognizing that someone so talented might have powerful backing. His composure falters when Xiao Yan identifies him and requests his services 33.

Agreement with Xiao Yan

Xiao Yan offers a Sixth-Grade Barrier-Breaking Pill to remove Medusa’s seal. Hai Bodong questions why such a promising alchemist would need a weakened Dou Emperor, but relents when Xiao Yan turns to leave. He offers five years of service after recovering his strength, extending the original three-year request; Xiao Yan promises to refine the pill within three years 34.

Hai Bodong also hands over both cut pieces of the Fragmented Map in his possession, giving Xiao Yan half of the map. He then accompanies Xiao Yan to Stone Desert City, where he is introduced to Xiao Ding and Xiao Li as a future source of protection for the Xiao Clan 34 35 36.

Underground Expedition and Medusa’s Return

Hai Bodong helps Xiao Yan and Qing Lin reach an underground lava region, excavating a shaft with an ice dragon. He later wounds the Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake with ice crystals, helping weaken it for Qing Lin to subdue 38.

Queen Medusa corners him and Qing Lin while Xiao Yan absorbs the Green Lotus Core Flame. Unable to oppose her, Hai Bodong survives only because Xiao Yan bargains for their lives and agrees to accompany her. Troubled by leaving Xiao Yan behind, he returns with Qing Lin to inform the Xiao brothers, following instructions to seek safety in the Imperial City 39 40 41.

The Mistaken Rescue

For the following half-year, Hai Bodong remains in the Imperial City to protect the Xiao Clan rather than returning to his map studies. When Xiao Yan’s letter announces his forthcoming marriage to Medusa, Hai Bodong interprets it as a disguised plea for rescue 47.

He uses Gu He’s interest in Heavenly Flames to organize an expedition, claiming that Medusa has taken the flames. Disguised in a black robe and accompanied by Mittel Tengshan, he intends to rescue Xiao Yan during the resulting confusion 47 48.

The plan collapses when Xiao Yan appears as Medusa’s willing fiancé and defeats the expedition. Hai Bodong admits responsibility for the misunderstanding and asks him to spare the others. Xiao Yan eases his attack, acknowledges Hai Bodong’s good intentions, and gives him the promised Barrier-Breaking Pill along with a Purple Spirit Recovery Pill 49 50.

Restoration and Imperial City Events

Hai Bodong remains fearful when Medusa emerges as a Dou Zong, expecting her to turn on the gathered humans. Her public kiss with Xiao Yan—and later her thanks to Hai Bodong—leave him stunned 51.

By the Alchemist Tournament, he has reached Seven-Star Dou Huang with Xiao Yan’s assistance. He warns Mu Chen that failing to explain Mu Zhan’s attack on Ya Fei could bring ruin upon the Mu Family 56.

Hai Bodong is cautious about both powerful strangers and apparently generous bargains. He questions Xiao Yan’s motives before accepting the service agreement and recognizes the danger of attacking him despite his youth. He also agrees to keep Xiao Yi Xian’s unusual poison consumption secret after Xiao Yan warns him 33 34.

He retains pride in his former reputation, grumbling when Xiao Yan orders him to dig and reminding the younger cultivator that the Ice Emperor’s name once inspired fear. Nevertheless, he performs the work and cooperates effectively 38.

His fear of Medusa is deeply rooted, but his concern for Xiao Yan becomes genuine. He protects the Xiao Clan during Xiao Yan’s absence and devises an indirect rescue because he cannot confront the Snake-People Tribe himself. That fear also makes him misread a sincere wedding invitation as a distress message 41 47 51.
