The People's Lawyer: Revenge, By the Book

October 1, 2002.

Xu De finds himself transported to Green Forest City in the Eastern Republic, where he becomes a lawyer and gains a special ability: whenever he satisfies a client, he can draw a reward.

But his very first client is a tough case! The man's wife has cheated on him repeatedly and now wants a divorce and a share of his assets so she can run off with her lover.

Faced with this, an ordinary lawyer would choose:

Option A: Divide the assets, leaving the client a cuckold while his wife and her lover squander his money.

Option B: Move the assets before the divorce, surrender a smaller share, and swallow the insult.

To make his client happy, Xu De decides to offer a rather unusual service.

"For example..."

"I'll show you how to get revenge-entirely within the law!"

The client is stunned. "Revenge can be legal!?"

"Of course," Xu De says. "You could scour the Criminal Code from cover to cover and still not find a single law it breaks!"

Years later, his fellow lawyers watch Xu De dance along the very edge of the law, as though daring someone to stop him. At last, they unleash a cry from the depths of their souls:

"Who in the world let this man become a lawyer!?"
