Of course, there were other weapons worth considering. That weapon master had made a fine choice with his lamppost.

But Ryan knew he still lacked the knowledge and experience to cast the spells he imagined. He needed to study and experiment more.

With a goal in mind, he threw himself into his studies.

He even went straight into the Spell House, took a spellbook from inside, and began reading.

The Guard saw how eager Ryan was and said nothing.

He merely shook his head. Ryan reminded him of his younger self, when he too had been captivated by the power of spells.

He had plunged into a sea of books to absorb their knowledge. Yet the more he learned, the more keenly he felt his own insignificance and the vast mystery of magic.

Ryan read diligently until noon. After a bite to eat, he headed back to the Spell House to continue.

Before he could get there, someone blocked his path.

Blocking his path was a defiant-looking man Ryan knew. "Kaecilius, why do you come to see me every day? Don't you have anything of your own to do?"

"No."

"Oh."

Ryan had no idea what was going on. Kaecilius, on the other hand, glanced around and waited until he was sure no one else was nearby.

Kaecilius slipped a Sling Ring onto his finger and traced a circle in the air.

A Portal appeared before them, slowly widening.
