Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Second Tier | 15 31 | Already at this tier while training as a third-rank Martial Artist; later tells Shi Qian he is close to the Third Tier. Martial arts are a secondary pursuit for him. |
| Fourth Tier | 103 105 | Breaks into the Middle Tier. His Spirit Sea grows to roughly four times its former capacity, although recovery leaves it slightly damaged. |
| Fifth Tier | 195 | Succeeds on his second attempt. His enlarged Spirit Sea lets him hover and move through the air, but not yet fly freely. |
| Sixth Tier | 256 | Uses an advancement potion and an Otherworldly Beast Core. The core also raises his physical strength to roughly that of a Sixth-Tier Martial Cultivator. |
| Sixth Tier, approaching peak | 316 318 | Rapid cultivation in the Forbidden Land and exposure to Divine Power permanently improve the quality of his Spirit Power. |
| Seventh Tier | 369 381 | An initial attempt fails but weakens his Spirit Sea Lock; a later breakthrough brings him into the High Tier and activates new effects of the Spirit Sage’s mark. |
| Seventh-Tier Peak | 436 444 | Continues refining his Spirit Lock while the mark’s Divine Power substantially improves his Spirit Power quality. |
| Eighth Tier | 446 | Breaks through with an Otherworldly Beast Core. His unusually refined Spirit Power makes breaking the lock comparatively easy, though the core remains painful to endure. |
| Eighth-Tier Late Stage | 482 | Can use the Blazing Sun World-Destroying Divine Art without an Ascension Pill. |
| Eighth-Tier Peak | 505 | Develops perception resembling Spirit Sense, supplemented by a continuously operating perception spell. |
| Ninth-Tier Peak | 522 | Has tailored the Blazing Sun World-Destroying Divine Art to his own use and become accustomed to controlling Spacetime Energy. |
Background and History
Chen Shu grew up in Yi Nation with memories of both his present childhood and a previous life on Earth. Those earlier memories emerged gradually, and he cannot say when he arrived in this world. He wants to find a way back to Earth to see it, though not necessarily to live there 11. His longstanding fascination with the Sacred Ancestor—whom he regards as a fellow traveler from another world—draws him into research on the Xia Dynasty and the Ancestor’s cubes 6 9 417.
He chooses spell principles rather than his historian father’s profession and studies at Yujing University 9 23. Teacher Shi Qian supports his studies and introduces him to the Spirit Sect, which Chen Shu joins 31 174. His research later becomes the subject of a unanimously approved graduation defense 440. Before the coming interplanar battle, the Spirit Sect appoints him Vice Sect Master, partly to ensure that his family will be cared for if he does not return 530.
Appearance
A university teacher describes Chen Shu as bright-looking and handsome 56.
- Temporary hairstyle — Ning Qing and Xiaoxiao give him a buzz cut during his recovery from a breakthrough; Xiaoxiao later gives him another after struggling with his requested style 195 387.
- High-Tier transformation — At the Seventh Tier, he can change his height, build, and, with care, his facial appearance, but cannot change his body’s total mass 381.
Personality
Chen Shu is playful and often claims to be lazy or uninterested in attention, yet he follows praise of his victories and research closely 175 310 441. He is careful with money because cultivation is expensive, taking commissions and negotiating for research materials while declining at least one lucrative job he considers wrong 16 36 57 102.
His curiosity is more persistent than his casual manner suggests. He compares historical sources, pursues questions about the Sacred Ancestor and the gods, and repeatedly revises spells for practical use 184 204 346. He also values ordinary routines—cooking, games, time with Ning Qing, and daily cultivation—even as his responsibilities grow 334 461.
Abilities and Skills
Spell Design
Chen Shu studies spell principles and modifies existing techniques rather than relying only on standard versions 16 346.
- Defensive diagrams — Improves a commissioned defensive spell, while clearly warning its buyer that its automatic activation has not been tested 16.
- Impact Art — Adjusts its force from a sustained gentle push to a stronger impact; he can even use it to keep off rain 35.
- Tracer Technique — Develops both an interception application and a separate High-Tier version using his Reverse Rune Principle. The latter produces more than 700% greater explosive power than the standard spell when supplied with Seventh-Tier Spirit Power, but has demanding energy requirements 342 396 440.
- Military spell research — Studies Penetration Runes and Swordlight Art using restricted weapons and shells obtained through Mr. Cat 102 106.
Combat Spells
- Barriers and ranged attacks — His defenses withstand Fourth-Tier Martial Cultivators, while his invisible Sword Qi, Tracer Technique, and lightning attacks make him difficult to approach 153 163.
- Blazing Sun Arts — Uses the destructive Little Blazing Sun Art in battle, learns the Great Blazing Sun Art, and later studies and adapts the Spirit Sect’s Blazing Sun World-Destroying Divine Art 229 387 456 522.
- Restraint and interception — Learns Divine Binding Technique and works to turn Tracer Technique projectiles into an automatic defense 342 364 396.
Flight and Physical Strength
- Flight — Studies the efficient, stable Cloud-Sky Art and the faster but more costly Rising with the Wind. By the Seventh Tier, Cloud-Sky Art can sustain long-distance flight at several hundred kilometers per hour 254 381.
- Beast Core enhancement — Otherworldly Beast Cores strengthen his body alongside his Spirit Sea. After reaching the Seventh Tier, his physique can rival that of a Seventh-Tier Martial Cultivator or Otherworldly Beast 256 370 381.
- Spirit Sage’s mark — At the Seventh Tier, it begins absorbing stray Spirit Power and returning it imbued with Divine Power 381.
Cooking and Music
- Cooking — Regularly prepares meals for family and friends, including Ning Qing’s birthday feast 57 153 155.
- Music — Sells songs under invented accounts of their supposed creators and advises performers on how to sing them 35 36 46.
Equipment and Items
- Crystal — Absorbs large amounts of his Spirit Power during cultivation and can store objects, including the Space Stone 48 482.
- Otherworldly Beast Cores — Used in several dangerous advancement attempts; they also contribute to his unusual physical strength 256 369 446.
- Essence-Returning Pills — Used to recover after breakthroughs and failed attempts, sometimes with temporary memory-related aftereffects 105 369 446.
- Space Stone — Taken into his custody after the group meets the Wish-Granting Dragon; he says the government can be informed and that he may hand it over later 482.
Relationships
- Ning Qing (“Qingqing”) — Childhood sweetheart and partner. She guards him through breakthroughs, supports his studies and matches, and shares a teasing domestic life with him 1 105 368 440 461.
- Ning Xiaoxiao — Qingqing’s younger sister; Chen Shu looks after her, while she later cares for him during a childlike post-breakthrough state 38 381.
- Professor Chen — His father and a historian. They tease one another, and Chen Shu helps him prepare a university lecture 3 436.
- Wei Yan (“Lawyer Wei”) — His mother, whose scolding and concern become especially clear when she learns he has concealed dangerous activities 9 422 465.
- Chen Banxia — His older sister; their affectionate bickering often revolves around food and his plans 184 355.
- Shi Qian — Teacher and spell-research mentor who gives him advanced material, advises his revisions, and supervises his graduation work 31 346 440.
- Du Heng — Spirit Sect Vice Sect Master and mentor who supports Chen Shu’s advancement, research, and access to sect techniques 204 256 364.
- Jiang Lai and Meng Chunqiu — Dormmates and friends. Chen Shu competes against Jiang in the Arena and regularly trades jokes with Meng 153 175 310.
- Zhang Suannai — Sword Sect cultivator, friend, rival, and frequent target of his group-chat teasing; Chen Shu defeats her at the Martial Body Meet 178 307 334.
- Huang Chu — Tiger demon and Forbidden Land partner. They rely on one another against stronger pursuers and remain in contact afterward 316 342.
Story Role and Major Arcs
- University and Spirit Sect — Chen Shu’s unusual aptitude attracts attention: he scores a perfect 1,000 in Spiritual Power Aptitude, while his power-quality and quantity readings register at the lowest Third-Tier grade. He studies Ancient Cultivation and later joins the Spirit Sect 27 174.
- Martial Body Meets — His spellwork overturns expectations against martial opponents, including a Fifth-Tier senior. He later wins his showdown with Zhang Suannai and becomes a tournament champion 163 169 307 310.
- Forbidden Land expedition — Cultivation amid Divine Power rapidly strengthens his Sixth-Tier Spirit Power, while deeper travel exposes him and his allies to Seventh- and Eighth-Tier enemies 316 318.
- Research recognition — His High-Tier Tracer Technique enters the Spirit Sect’s collection, is adopted by the military, and passes a unanimous graduation defense 440.
- Preparations for war — By the Ninth-Tier Peak, he focuses on Spacetime Energy and the Blazing Sun World-Destroying Divine Art. His appointment as Vice Sect Master precedes the gathering of Ninth-Tier combatants for the interplanar battle 522 530.
