While the two argued, Shizune poked her head through the shattered window, glanced down, then withdrew and headed for the stairs.
A moment later, she appeared on the grass outside the Hokage Building's side door. She was walking faster than usual, her chest rising and falling.
She jogged up to Tsunade, stopped, and bowed slightly.
"Lady Tsunade, Zhan Zhao from the Konoha Military Police Force is here. He says he has something to report."
Tsunade looked away from Jiraiya and toward Shizune, then raised her eyes to the side door.
Zhan Zhao emerged from the doorway, back straight and steps steady. His dark blue Security Force uniform had a muted sheen in the sunlight.
He stopped three paces from Tsunade and bowed slightly.
"Lady Tsunade, Lord Yongye has captured the rogue ninja Hiruzen Sarutobi and his accomplices: Orochimaru, Kimimaro, Aburame Ryoma, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu. Lord Yongye sent me to inform you that they will face a public trial tomorrow."
Zhan Zhao spoke without servility or arrogance, enunciating every word.
After the final sentence, he straightened. His gaze passed over Tsunade's face, then over Jiraiya lying on his side in the grassy hollow nearby. It lingered for an instant on the blood still seeping from the corner of Jiraiya's mouth before he looked away without comment.
Tsunade stood still, her hands at her sides and her fingers slightly spread. She looked away from Zhan Zhao and down at the trampled grass beneath her feet. After two breaths, she raised her gaze again.
"Understood. You can go."
Zhan Zhao gave a slight nod and turned toward the side door. His footsteps sounded a few times on the grass, then vanished through the doorway.
