Chapter 14 13. South (Signed the contract! Wuhu!)
Barbarus, the southern swamps.
Hades was hugging his scythe, sleeping in a strange posture near the farmland. The simple little campsite he'd set up was still faintly smoking from the recently extinguished fire.
It was daytime on Barbarus, and the nearby farmers were out tilling the fields with their tools, chatting and laughing, but all of them tacitly kept their distance from Hades.
He was a strange wanderer who had come south almost alongside the Death Guard.
At first, the villagers were quite averse to this mysterious person who wandered around the village from time to time. He seemed extremely ill-intentioned, and even just looking at him from afar was enough to make people dislike him.
But when the villagers asked the Death Guard stationed there to drive the mysterious person away, they were met with unanimous silence.
"That person isn't a bad guy... His name is Hades."
Even so, the villagers were still careful to avoid him.
But later they realized the truth hidden in the Death Guard's silence.
As the screams of the night gradually faded, the villagers who went to farm by horse-drawn cart the next morning saw an incredible sight—
Limbs and fragments scattered all over the ground, blood splattered everywhere like streams, the wheat seedlings trampled and broken, an expression of disbelief frozen on the Alien Lord's shattered head.
A pungent, fishy stench wafted from the wheat field.
And next to this wheat field, which looked like a scene from hell, a man was hugging his scythe, propping up his cheek, snoring loudly.
The silver-white blade was still stained with spots of thick red blood, and the man in the hood seemed to be soaked in blood, saturated with the thick plasma. Several scratches were clearly visible on his limbs.
He was the Grim Reaper!
The villagers, terrified and trembling, stared at everything in shock, and the man seemed to be disturbed—he woke up from his sleep with a start.
"Ah, um, sorry for ruining your wheat field, haha, uh... I'm really sorry, I was trying to lure them out, but I didn't succeed."
The man laughed awkwardly a few times, as if trying to ease the atmosphere.
Obviously, his actions failed.
"I'll help you plant together to make up for it! Really! I'm very sorry!"
This world must be fake, the villager driving the cart thought before fainting.
After that, the villagers respectfully and fearfully called this mysterious person "Wraith."
Of course, they didn't dare accept Hades' apology or compensation.
Not only that, but they would also regularly send some extra grain to this strange Wraith. Whenever the Wraith went out, the villagers would erect a dead tree next to the small triangular shelter he had built the day before, with a bag of grain tied to it.
The Wraith spent most of his daytime sleeping to replenish his energy for the night's battles. But sometimes, he would hold that huge scythe and sit on the ridge of the field, silently watching the villagers farm.
Some children would curiously stand in the distance and stare at this strange man. If their parents were busy farming and didn't notice their children, the bolder ones would sneak closer.
The Wraith seemed happy to have children play with him. He would take out a handful of roasted wheat, sit on the ground, wave his hand, and beckon the children to come over.
—But no child had ever successfully reached his side.
Without exception, those bold children would feel dizzy and breathless when they approached the Wraith. They would run away crying, leaving the Wraith alone, sitting on the ridge, watching the children run away crying, while their parents watched the Wraith in fear from afar.
Each time a crying child ran back, they would inevitably be slapped by their anxious and frightened parents, then hugged tightly, and comforted with repeated pats on the back.
In the distance was the silent Wraith, here was the flavor of human life.
It was always like this.
The Death Guard who first arrived in the south had a lot of complaints about Hades.
Why should they work so hard to build defensive villages, only for the limelight to be stolen by the person who roamed and killed enemies alone at night?
He single-handedly harvested three groups of roaming monsters in one night, protecting three small villages that were close to each other, while the Death Guard had fortified all the nearby medium and large human strongholds.
Some busybodies suggested that the Death Guard should also take the initiative to attack at night, after all, unlike the north, the monsters in the south were weaker.
Calas Typhon's eyes flashed with a strange light, and he approved the proposal of a group of war-loving busybodies.
However, this five-man team was attacked on the first night. Although they successfully repelled the slave-hunting team that came seeking them, three of them were seriously injured as a result.
At the subsequent meeting summary, Calas Typhon paced slowly around the sandbox table, "As you can see, Hades does have the ability to survive in the wild."
"Although I know that everyone here is quite averse to him, we are all members of the Death Guard after all, and our goal is to defeat those Alien Lords who enslave the people."
"The Death Guard never seeks fame, our purpose is to liberate humanity."
"And, Hades—"
Calas Typhon stopped. He paused, and looked at the Death Guard captains sitting in a circle in the room, listening silently.
"He can alleviate the pressure from the Alien Lord for us. After all, another goal of our southward march is to unite other human villages, so we can dedicate more time and energy."
"Talk to those village chiefs who are unwilling to cooperate with us."
Typhon pondered. Some villages in the south, after submitting to the aliens, would be granted some technology as a reward, including some anti-toxin and weapon technologies.
However, as time passed, those Death Guard who once harbored grievances fell silent.
Hades took the initiative to find Typhon, the Death Guard leader, to talk. He was going to a nearby mountain to kill the Alien Lord.
"Are you crazy?! Do you really think you can kill an Alien Lord alone? Do you really take that fluke as your strength? You're not Mortarion! Hades! Don't be stupid!!!"
Typhon shouted incredulously at Hades, who was at the other end of the room. For some reason, Hades insisted on keeping a certain distance between them.
"I'm not crazy. I'm sure I can do it. I've fully assessed it."
Hades's black eyes, hidden under his hood, stared intently at Typhon.
Typhon felt a tremor in his heart. He took a deep breath and continued, "Hades, Hades, Hades, I... I know I've always disliked you. Yes, I dislike you, but, after all, the three of us escaped together."
"We are the Death Guard, comrades-in-arms. Although we have had friction with each other, but... we are still friends, aren't we?"
Typhon looked back at Hades.
Hades didn't speak. He just nodded slightly in acknowledgment, and his hood covered his eyes again.
"So, listen to my advice, don't go, okay? Don't go."
"You are not Mortarion. No one on Barbarus can do this except him."
Hades stood up. The things on his body jingled as he moved. He bowed slightly to Typhon.
"Thank you for your kindness, Typhon. I'm also glad we're still friends."
"But I'm determined to go."
After that, Typhon saw countless alien heads being chopped off.
Damn, that monster.
