The Training Ground in Spirit City was unusually quiet that day.
Not because it was empty.
Quite the opposite. Young Soul Masters lined its edges, every one of them a talent handpicked by Spirit Hall. They were used to thinking highly of themselves, but today, not one dared speak loudly.
Because someone from the Worship Hall had arrived.
And because the person they were waiting for was late.
Yan folded his arms, his short red hair like a banked fire. "Is he coming or not?"
Xie Yue stood beside him, his Moon Blade still sheathed. His voice was steady. "Great Enshrined Qian Daoliu gave the order himself. He'll come."
Hu Liena said nothing.
She was more perceptive than Yan. She could tell this did not feel like an ordinary lesson. People from the Elder Hall, the Papal Hall, and the Worship Hall were all watching. This Bai Jin had clearly returned for more than a few Soul Skill lessons.
A moment later, footsteps sounded at the Gate of the Training Ground.
Bai Jin walked in.
Silver hair, a black eyepatch, and road dust still clinging to his clothes. He carried a bag of candy bought in Heaven Dou City, as though he had just come back from a stroll.
Yan stared at him. "You're late."
Bai Jin glanced at the sky. "Am I? The sun still looks pretty high to me."
A vein jumped at Yan's temple.
Hu Liena stepped forward and greeted him with impeccable courtesy. "Senior Bai."
"Don't call me that. Makes me sound old." Bai Jin tossed the candy aside. "Teacher's fine. Brother's fine too. Everyone who can't beat me ends up pretty polite anyway."
A few sharp breaths sounded around the Training Ground.
Yan could hold back no longer. "I want to try."
Xie Yue frowned.
